Generally speaking, the lower the price of the mattress, the lower the quality of the foams used -- which means the faster it will start to sag and become uncomfortable. The opposite is unfortunately not necessarily true -- and there are many high priced low quality mattresses out there.

My 12 year old son needs a new mattress. His biggest complaint is his current mattress is “too hard” and it wasn’t a super firm mattress.
Does the gel help not make it ridiculously hot? I’m not expecting it to be cold but as long as it’s not stupid warm.

Just my 2 cents, but if you get a memory foam topper you can keep using your existing mattress and box spring. Some people really like the toppers, I know I do. And they are much cheaper than buying a whole mattress.
