I'm in the same situation, I intend to start my server at Christmas. Some of the things I plan to do to keep the server active for longer are: Create a Mini Games Park where people can create and play other people's mini games, all in survival of course. Some weekly events, which can encourage constructions in groups, PVP and other things that generate interactions between players. These events can also be themed, like in Christmas and New Year. Create a clan system to encourage people to live close to one another, and group work. And a system of titles, where players who do grandiose things or participate in events gain titles. But I still do not know how I'll implement it. Idk if everything works, but I think it's worth trying. More on reddit.com

Think of it like a hotel hallway with numbered doors. Your Minecraft server is only letting people in and out on say port 25565. They are used for connections to services or protocols to use for sending and receiving (listening) data / connections. Like all HTTP traffic is sent on port 80, HTTPS on 443. These are called reserved ports So when you open 25565 your Minecraft is listening for any connections to your IP and coming in on port 25565. If someone tried to goto another port it would be denied as you don’t have it open Services must have a unique port so you wouldn’t have Minecraft server & something else on the same port. Unless using a TCP socket connection I believe but I couldn’t comment on that So a port can host multiple connections to it but you would only have 1 service on the receiving end like your MC server but multiple people can connect on that 1 port.
