Dude the Atari VCS. It's basically a steam deck in a different box (very similar AMD SoCs), but you can get the VCS for less than an RP4 -- like $120 on sale. They were down to $99 for a minute but I don't think they'll go that low again. And this thing is great. You can boot it from an external SSD with something like Batocera for emulation, and it is a beast. I haven't found a system on Batocera that doesn't go full spead on the VCS, and I'll throw some dumb shaders on shit just because. I've got another SSD with ChimeraOS for all my Steam games, and everything runs perfectly as long as you use whichever settings would be appropriate for the Steam deck. And -- and -- the built in AtariOS and its associated games are surprisingly good. That's just a bonus, although the games that the kids and I play together mainly live there (the Recharged! series of games like Asteroids, Centipede, etc.) We've got three VCSs now: one upstairs (our game room), one downstairs (the kids game room), and one in our office that my wife uses for streaming (although I added 32 GB or RAM to that one). As a single-board computer it's at a price/performance sweet spot that is very, very hard to beat. More on reddit.com

You can run Windows for ARM on the Raspberry Pi 4. If you want one that runs x86-64 Windows, the LattePanda is the one I've heard others talk about. https://www.lattepanda.com/ More on reddit.com

Every Single Board Computer I Tested in 2025 - bret.dk
2025 was a pretty busy year for single board computers. I had 15 boards released in 2025 come through the bench from 8 different manufacturers, spanning SoCs from Rockchip, Broadcom, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Allwinner, StarFive, CIX, and Texas Instruments. Prices have ranged from $42 all the way up to $590, and the variety on offer has been genuinely impressive.

r/SBCs on Reddit: SBC that can easily handle desktop and IDEs
October 26, 2024 -
Looking to do some home projects, and would like a cheap(ish) dev machine. I want to be able to run a Linux desktop like Gnome, KDE or whatever is the popular desktop nowadays, and IDEs like IntelliJ, VScode etc.
I wouldnโt be coding anything particularly complex so I assume my wants are mostly option for ssd, 16 gigs ram, wifi. Not sure if SBC meeting that exists for decent price point (when compared to traditional desktop) or if Iโm better off looking at an Intel NUC?
Iโve not tried. RPI5 but found RPI4 was just a bit too sluggish but it was only 4GB ram version.
Price Point: Around ยฃ200 - ยฃ250.

I'm not an expert in SBCs. But I can share what I know. At that price point, you can get very decent mini-PCs. Mini-PCs are better for your purpose because they come with everything you need for a home-server/extra-pc (SSD, Windows OS license, case, fan, power cord, support for a lot of peripherals, and potentially upgradeable RAM) but without GPIO PINs. For example, see this: https://a.co/d/gLb9vIf Another benefit of a mini-PCs is their amd64 architecture that has much better software support than arm. I'm boycotting Intel because of the BDS movement's guidelines. So I would advise against buying Intel CPUs. However, if you choose to buy Intel, the N100 chip is their current most popular/efficient low power chip. The N95 is less power efficient but has somewhat better performance. I'm saying this because I covet the N100 chip but can't buy it. If you are aiming for performance instead... You have many options. Including AMD chips that I don't think the BDS movement is boycotting right now. You can find more advice in r/miniPCs 2. Instead of vanilla Raspberry Pi, consider buying alternatives like Orange Pi, Radxa, Banana Pi, etc. They have more performant chips that are more power efficient and cheaper at the same time. They are not just Raspberry Pi clones. They are superior in every way other than popularity and brand name. Perhaps if you will do something very obscure, I would be a bit concerned about software support. But that doesn't seem to be the case right now. Edit: clarifications
