Just my personal opinion: Under 500: very small subreddit; niche or meme; created on a whim. Often very inactive or only one or two active members. Essentially 0 moderation is the norm Under 5,000: a small subreddit; a small but substantial following or a highly specific or esoteric topic. Some activity, can be very active in some cases, less so in others, none in abandoned subs. Moderation can exist but is often insignificant as these subs only rarely attract large scale attention. Under 25,000: a medium sized subreddit; these subs have moderate and daily activity, are usually about very well established topics that tend to be less popular. Little moderation is needed at this size but you start to see more rules based modding at this level. Under 100,000: a large subreddit; Very active, usually highly moderated and well established subreddit. Topics can be common but not completely universal, such as geographic or artistic (TV and movies especially) in nature. Under 1,000,000: a very large subreddit; you're familiar with many of these. These subreddits tend to be about large popular culture topics or celebrities, brands, and artistic topics such as around the home, cooking, as well as sports and other fandoms. Moderation tends to be very heavy. Over 1,000,000: a mega-sub; likely a former default sub or a very general topic. These subs have reached zeitgeist status and tend to shape Reddit itself.
