Unpopular feeling: I start missing Skeuomorph design
I appreciate the trend away from skeuomorphism because it refocuses the approach of design on solid fundamentals rather than gimmicky but cool looking effects. This understandably funnels many designs toward a number of best practices that end up giving the web a more uniform look. Like, why invest time and money trying to recreate the wheel when you can simulate material design and piggyback off of Google's massive UX budget? I totally hear you with the sentiment of it becoming boring, but I personally think it's really cool that we're all co-designing a visual language of the web. Best practices get noticed, remixed and further refined. Still plenty of room for bold design strokes, but I'd much prefer an app or site that uses and elaborates on the modern visual language of the web, rather than simulating styles of yesteryear. June 13, 2013 - Webb wants the skeuomorph revived, and sees their fall from grace as a matter of taste and fashion. If we are going to move away from the tried and tested designs, we should at least take risks and experiment with new ideas, he says. "Smartphones look like po-faced black monoliths. Why not have something which looks a bit more fun, and more joyful?" Stocking says he has learned from the example ...

Digital devices and apps can help us communicate, learn, shop, and take care of our health. But getting the hang of new tech isn’t always easy. That’s where skeuomorphism can help. This design style uses real-world elements (think Apple’s trash can for deleted files) to make the user experience more intuitive.

Skeuomorphism: balancing realism and figurative design
February 3, 2025 - Even if you’ve never used a computer before, you probably have a pretty good idea how to delete something. Skeuomorphism makes technology easier to use by building on what we already know about the real world. Another great example is the way books were displayed in early versions of Apple’s iBooks app.
