Slacks and 'dress pants' are, as far as I'm aware, just American terms for smart (usually wool) separate trousers. No idea what 'slackers' are in a trousering context. Chinos are more casual trousers made in a cotton twill - almost always flat-fronted, as cotton doesn't hold a pleat as well (although other kinds of cotton weave trousers, like cords and moleskins, sometimes have pleats). Pleats are additional folds in the front of the trouser fabric - most commonly found on wool trousers including worsted separates, flannels, suit trousers, formal trousers etc. 'Single' or 'double' just refers to the number of folds on each leg; they are intended to provide more room around the wider part of the leg when needed, and have become associated with a more formal and/or old fashioned style. They are quite practical though. Slacks / dress pants - smart trousers pressed with a crease, usually made out of wool Chinos - cotton trousers that sit between jeans and slacks in formality. Details like visible stitching, a pressed crease and how smooth the fabric is can make them more or less formal. Slackers - an American term for draft dodgers in WW1. Pleats are folds of fabric underneath the waistband of the trousers. Forward pleats face towards the fly, reverse pleats towards the pockets (Google can show you pictures). They give you extra room in the hips. They don’t affect formality and are best thought of as a stylistic choice. They are becoming more fashionable, after being out of fashion for over 15 years, but have been in and out of fashion for over 100 years.

I'm a 45M professional, that works in a casual work environment where the dress can range from a shirt and jeans (me 95% of the time) to suit and tie depending on what one is doing that day. I've always been lazy about what I wear and find I function much better when I dress nicely.

Turning over a new leaf I ordered a half dozen shirt and tie combos from Charles Tyrwhitt this week. Now I'm trying to figure out what kind of pants to pair with this. I like the fit of Bonobos jeans, should I look at their Chinos or their (or someone elses) dress pants?

I'm not looking a becoming a fashion model, just a clean professional look from a solid number of pants and shirts I can rotate through weekly. Thanks for any advice.

r/Outlier on Reddit: Best Replacement for Dress Slacks or Chinos
July 19, 2016 -

Hi,

Looking to dress a bit less casually for the office; would like to retain the mobility and resiliency to odor that Outlier garments provide.

What would be the best outlier replacement for dress slacks or chinos? While I like the overall look of the classic OGs, the lack of color variety makes me lean toward the 60/30 Chinos. Would someone mind lending me their opinion on the matter? Cost is somewhat irrelevant; would like to pair with tasteful blazers of matching colors. Thinking about picking up Black and Black Navy. Charcoal/olive are also under consideration.

Thanks!

April 26, 2016 - That said, what chinos have in common is they're made of a canvas-like material with a flat weave-- usually all cotton, but sometimes a poly-cotton blend. Some chinos are very casual. I have a pair of Timberland chinos that might as well be jeans, and I never wear them with a jacket.

Perhaps this is a personal preference or I have not been buying expensive enough chinos, but I have never wore or seen a pair of chinos that truly looked great. Even outfits on models, I think would look better with dress pants, linen, or jeans.

Now there is no fine line between chinos and slacks/pants/trousers but I'm using the general definition that mall brand stores use. So for example, Banana Republic Chinos: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=35878 vs Banana Republic Dress Pants: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=1072457

It might be the way the cotton fabric wrinkles on chinos, most of the time chinos look sloppy compared to the clean lines of dress pants and uniformed wrinkles of linen. What do you all think?

I've been swapping out most of my pants for cotton/polyester trousers from brands like Uniqlo, Lululemon, and Fabletics. I usually stick with a casual style (sweaters, t-shirts, jackets, and sneakers) and don't need formal attire 99% of the time.

With that said, am I breaking any style rules by pairing trousers with casual outfits? Should I consider switching to chinos for a more informal but stylish vibe? For example, how do you all feel about pairing black polyester trousers with a knit sweater and Air Force 1s?

I'm a BIG fan of chinos. Like you said, they're a nice middle ground between casual jeans and formal slacks. For that reason, I like that they can be dressed up and down to fit the situation I find myself in. This also helps keep the number of items in my wardrobe down, as I don't need separate slacks/chinos/jeans/etc. I can just have a couple pairs that are good for everything. Another reason I love chinos are the color variety. I like being able to mix and match outfits and add contrast or monochrome based on my mood/event/etc. Chinos allow me to have a wide variety of options in different colors, that again, can be dressed up and down. Last point for chinos over slacks... I don't have to dry clean them. I'm a simple man and I don't work a job like finance/lawyer that require such formality. So, if I can get away with throwing them in the washing machine with everything else and skip on dry cleaning, extra brownie points IMO. I should add that I still love my raw denim as well. Raw denim + 2-3 pairs of chinos and I am good for bottoms in my wardrobe.

I'm a big chino fan, but there are a few things worth noting. One, the primary advantage jeans and dress pants have over chinos is that they aren't versatile. You can dress a look up or down. You can direct the entire outfit by doing something like jeans + blazer -- instantly an odd combination that pulls the blazer down, pushes the jeans up, and puts you in a specific spot in between. Chinos are safe and versatile, which means they don't push the look in any particular, interesting direction... unless they're interesting chinos. Two, chinos can be dressier or less dressy. Details like the pockets, the crease (if there is one), pleats, particular fabric (weight, waxiness, etc), wrinkliness, stuff like that. Three... Shit like burgundy or plum chinos isn't too versatile. Color is a very easy way to take a safe item and make it more interesting.

I work in a corporate Sydney CBD office for a top 50 asx listed company and wear navy chinos with a button up suit shirt. I noticed that I'm the only male in my office that wears chinos, everyone else wears suit pants and a button up suit shirt (no ties or jackets). Do you think I would be regarded as dressing casual with my chinos? They are just so much more comfy compared to suit pants!!! Thoughts?

Hey everybody,

Today I bought my first pair of chinos. I grew up wearing jeans and never even considered having another type of pant. Until recently i got a cotton cargopant. I like it. It is comfortable and soft on the skin. It keeps me warm enough in winter but is much nicer in the summer than my jeans. I decided to slowly move away from jeans and get more alternatives, maybe even replace jeans fully. My plan was to maybe use cargopants for a more casual, rugged look and use chinos for both casual and smart looks. That brings me to my chinos. I bought my first set today and they are nice. When I got home i checked my fancy trousers (I don't have an actual dresspant because I never really need to go somewhere that fancy) and found out they are exactly the same materials. They are both made from 98% cotton and 2% elastane. Both of them have the four pocket flatfront design. They are from the same brand, but the ones i got today were called chino and the ones I already had were just sold as trousers. So what exactly is the difference?

Brick-and-mortar stores are somewhat limited in my area, so I'm hoping to expand my options online. Companies with a generous return policy are of course preferred.

I live in Florida, so I would prefer natural fabrics if possible but I'm also open to tech/moisture-wicking stuff.

I prefer "tailored fits" over slim fits. I'm 6'1" / 160 pounds (185 cm / 73 kg), generally 30 waist and 32 or 34 inseam depending on the brand.

(I need shirts too, but IMO shirts are much easier to thrift, plus I have a better idea of which brands I like for shirts if I have to buy new.)

What do you guys think about chinos, always been a jeans guy,but I like the more elegant quality about chinos. Any suggestions, like, what occasions are the best time to wear them, does the baggy trend apply to them like jeans, are they too old for guys in their twenties, and what to look for in terms of quality. Any other forms of advice would also be appreciated.

Chinos should be a part of an adult man’s wardrobe. If jeans are technically workwear (based on history not necessarily modern use) and slacks were professional/business/dressier attire, Chino’s cover pretty much everything in between. I’d avoid overly slim or baggy versions. Check Gap, Banana, Bonobos and J Crew for what would be considered acceptable fits for the 2020’s. All these brands offer reasonable quality for the price. The biggest distinction is do you want something with a bit of wash (weekends/evenings) or something a bit sharper for the office. Technical material might be ok depending on your workplace, but classic cotton is the standard. I avoided chino’s and khakis for a long time since they felt a bit boring and were almost normcore in my younger years. However, as someone who’s been out of school longer than I attended school, the status quo changes. What was considered “old man” wear is now a more mature option than wearing jeans all the time. I still have a nice selvedge denim collection, but when I’m socializing with other adults (especially in a professional setting or nicer venue), I’ll usually bust out the chino’s. In my organization, one can pretty much determine someone’s position in the company based on their choice of pants when we meet up outside the office. As for when to wear them, lighter colors for daytime/warmer months and darker in the evening/winter. Pair with polo’s or even better a thick oxford cotton button down color for a timeless look. The real secret to acing this is the accessories. A nice brown leather belt with brown loafers has been in for nearly 50 years and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. However, more modern cuts and also pair well with a webbed belt and lower profile sneakers like Nike Killshot.

I love chinos and so will you! In my opinion, they clearly feel nicer to the touch and they’re just less rigid and more comfortable to wear than jeans. Plus jeans are absolutely oppressive in the heat while chinos breathe and flow (check out linen pants too if you get around to it one day)! On top of that you get more color options. If we exclude physical labor, anywhere you’d wear jeans, chinos are very likely acceptable and then some because they can look a bit smarter than jeans. I’m sure you can find specific outfits where jeans are better (maybe a more rugged jacket or workwear looks), but they work for ts, polos, collared shirts, etc. Men in their twenties will look great in chinos. I originally thought of chinos as “fancy” because all I knew were jeans. I never really thought about it, but I almost imagined chinos as being similar to wool trousers for a suit. I now see them as being on a very similar spot on the formality spectrum as jeans, but more comfortable and more put together (but still casual). Maybe I’m officially an old person, but I don’t think tight or baggy is ever the best option. IMO, let it roughly follow the form of your body with 1.5 inches (or so?) of pinchable fabric. Guessing on that measurement. Google “put this on chinos” and see what they’ve written about the topic. I’ve found that site to be helpful.
