Sleep numbers are glorified air mattresses. They're too lightweight to conform to a raised adjustable base. When I got mine ages ago they used bolts to hold the mattress to the base. Now they use heavy duty magnets to do it. You need their overpriced base, unfortunately. More on reddit.com

Sleep number mattresses aren't heavy enough to stay in place. They need to be attached to the adjustable base. Mine bolted to the base. They've since gone to heavy duty magnets instead of bolts. No other base is going to have this feature, unfortunately, so you have to get the SN base. If you get the SN adjustable base and decide to switch to a different mattress, that will work with your SN base. (I'm sitting on my latex mattress on my old SN base right now! My husband and I are getting a sleep number. The adjustable base is $3k which I think is insane (total cost being 7.3k before tax w the mattress). There’s a tempurpedic ergo base on sale for $1.3k, and there’s a base on Amazon with great reviews for $900. My husband wants to buy the sleep number base, and while we can afford it, I’ll lose sleep blowing that much on a base (haha!)

I can speak to this based on 5 years experience with a Sleep Number i8 and a mattress firm adjustable base. We have a projector in our bedroom and enjoy watching about 1-2 hours of TV before bed. We usually set the adjustable base to a Zero Gravity position that elevates the head, elevates the legs and we also have the adjustable lumbar feature (this IS important!) Pros: Getting a Mattress Firm base was a lot cheaper than a sleep number base It works just as well as how I would imagine a Sleep Number base to work Cons: The mattress is held in place by a retainer bar at the feet. It allows the mattress to shift from side to side and can get too close to a night stand. Not usually a big deal to shove it back over. This is prevented with the magnets The retainer bar is uncomfortable to sit on if you sit on the foot of the bed frequently, otherwise you'll never know it's there. Magnets = no retainer bar Having to use 2 apps/remotes to control the bed kinda sucks and the mattress firm app is janky AF, you basically need to use the remote. Meanwhile the Sleep Number app is really polished. Hope this helps!
