My husband (50m) and I (42f) have been married for almost 15 years and for the past 2 years I have been sleeping almost exclusively in our “spare” room because the bed is more comfortable and there’s more space that way so we BOTH sleep better. My husband admits that we sleep better now but is still not happy about the situation and he is finally willing to look into upgrading to a sleep number type split king (currently have Queen) My husband likes a much firmer mattress than me and has NO interest in using an adjustable frame so he has suggested getting a twin xl adjustable for me and just a standard flat bed from ikea or something for him in order to save money. Is this a thing that would work at all?? Would it even save money?? I have found ZERO information on the internet about it and am frankly getting pretty frustrated.
I have a few notes for you. We were in the same situation recently and had a similar solution. We got two cheap adjustable frames from Amazon and two Sleepnumber C2 mattresses. (everything Twin XL). We put those together inside the footprint of our existing bed. Like the other poster said, this leaves a gap between the mattresses that is kind of strange. The sleepnumber mattresses specifically are very lightweight, so they move more than a standard mattress probably would. I'm currently returning the sleepnumber, and opted for a heavier duty innerspring mattress. i found that I just like the feel of innersprings more than a Sleepnumber at 90-100 percent. If you decide you want Sleepnumber, I would strongly recommend going for the flextop model, and find two twin XL bases someplace else. This would let you adjust the head of your bed independent of your husband's side, but it's still a single mattress, so you won't have a big gap to worry about. Answer from Square-Wild on reddit.com

Have you slept on a split king bed before? It’s exactly like sleeping on twin size mattress. So going from a queen to a twin might be a struggle for both of you, since you’re used to sleeping on separate queen mattresses. A one piece king has a lot of room, but split king is a whole different story with the crack that runs down the middle. I was told this several times by people and didn’t understand, but now I do. I just recently went from a king to split king with adjustable bases and wish I wouldn’t have done that. Because it’s like me and my wife are sleeping on different beds, and much smaller beds than we were when it was a one piece king. My mattress is DIY so it’s easy for me to get a king encasement and switch back to a one piece king, which I will eventually do after my wife has our baby (She likes the adjustable base while pregnant). And if she’s pregnant again later I can always switch it back to a split king. If the adjustable base isn’t that important to you, you can try a one piece king mattress that has different firmness levels on each side like the sleeponlatex, sleep number or something similar. If the adjustable base is important and you get the twin xl’s (split king) you can always just get one twinxl adjustable base and a regular base and put them side by side. Just make sure the heights will be the same. There’s no issues in doing something like that. Also look at the Malouf adjustable bases, very nice, with a lot of features and is way cheaper than others I’ve found. I have the S755 in 2 twinxl’s and it was $2,300 delivered from Rest Right Mattress. You have to contact them to get the best price, as their listed prices are higher. Good Luck!
