Hi all! My boyfriend and I have two bathrooms that look like this. I’m comfortable painting the walls myself, and I’m considering a very light blue (right now they are a gray purple).
The house is from the very early 2000s, and I don’t believe this bathrooms have been updated since then.
I have only rented in the past, so I’m really struggling with what to do about the floors, cabinets, and sink.
The lighting is not great in this photo, but the sink is kind of an off yellowish white.
If my budget is say a couple thousand dollars, what would you all recommend? E.g. Re-staining or completely replacing the cabinets?
I would also have nowhere to begin on the floors.
For reference, I’m a fan of things that are on the vintage/Victorian side. My boyfriend owns this house so the issue is more so budget than what we’re able to do.

Definitely wouldn’t do blue on walls, especially if you were wanting a more vintage/Victorian look. I would maybe think of staining the vanity a darker color, get a vintage runner to cover some of the floor, brass mirror and fixtures, and dark paint on the wall

November 21, 2024Advice?: Improving a very tiny bathroom without much renovation
I once had that exact bath in a 1937 bungalow in Seattle. Step one: enhance storage above the toilet. Step two, replace cabinet vanity with either a small round console or wall hung. I know. This seems heretical because it reduces storage. And I never would have done it if not for the guidance of a talented designer. Rectilinear pieces like the square vanity have corners that jut into the space and kill movement and traffic flow. My bath felt immediately more spacious once those corners were removed. I saved up and sprang for a good quality era compatible retro piece from American Standard that also had a round drawer base. The painful part about this kind of restoration is the plumbing. Ultimately to make it look right you also need to spring for a fully chromed sink tailpiece, p-trap, and wall escutcheon, and fully chromed, cross handle supplies. But you can do that in stages. If you replace the sink it looks like you'd damage the tiles unless you found one the exact same size and were very careful. Removing all the tiles and retiling is messy and if you're paying someone will cost a few grand in labour. You can do it yourself if you're patient. You can paint tiles but imo it doesn't look great. You can paint or replace the cabinet below the sink easy enough. The toilet room you can paint or wallpaper, maybe tiles or lino on the floor and a nice mirror.
