Teeny tiny front yard ideas?
I would nix the grass there entirely. It's shady :) Where are you specifically? Zone 7 just tells us how cold it gets. I'm guessing you're in the Southeast. Is the tree shading the area deciduous or evergreen? Very cute house that you can complement well with a small scale shade garden. Build your retaining wall. You're instincts are right with the azaleas, hosta, and astilbe! Maybe plant one rhody, but you don't want to plant anything that gets bigger than about 5x5. Make a defined path to the side/backyard wide enough to roll a trash can. Maybe edge the path in a the same or similar material to the wall and/or your front walk. If the tree shading this is deciduous, plant A LOT of daffodils in clumps throughout. Maybe mix up a few varieties that bloom at different times (but keep each clump as one variety). Help! Front yard ideas?!

I'd reccomend doing your part to help out the ecosystem and removing some of that lawn where you won't be using it. Introduce some native plants in its place (https://www.nwf.org/NativePlantFinder/Plants is a great resource for most states). Maybe introduce some hardscaping so you can enjoy nice days out on the yard. I'm always happy to talk and even make some rough draft ideas!

Front Garden Design Ideas: Inspiration For Front Yards of Any Size
December 20, 2024 - I have a hillside in my front yard that goes completely dormant in the summer. In early spring, I plan to scatter some Eco-Lawn. This local brand combines several types of fescue seeds that will grow into a drought-tolerant lawn. You can also diminish the size of your lawn, so if you still want that feeling of grass under your toes, keep a small area.

https://waterwisegardenplanner.org This site saved me when I got rid of the last of my lawn. The YouTube lectures in resources talked me through it. I'd done fine with the rest of the designing but going no lawn completely was hard. First, can you claim is lawn? If so do not touch it until you figure out if you can claim a rebate for lawn removal. See your water district for info. Desert plants grow pretty fast if watered. My desert willows had to be threatened with replacement but now one is 10' tall. Purely by accident the shorter plants grew to full size in a few months so the yard looks filled out but what I want is a canopy over the ground more than the 3-5' tall coastal scrub it is now. Theodore Payne is a great resource and you can buy tiny plants for less than $10 each. I believe you need 3 plants per 100 square feet for the rebate programs and your yard is 400-500? Perhaps there are nurseries selling native desert plants as well? There is a Mojave CNPS chapter. https://chapters.cnps.org/mojave/ perhaps a plant sale and your garden progress will coincide or you'd like to find out more about your local environment. Decomposed granite and bare dirt are the right surface but you can put down cardboard and chip drop for free as a weed suppressing mulch. It won't kill the bermuda grass but it looks better than bare dirt. Scavenge large rock and downed wood for your hardscape elements. How could I forget! https://calscape.org has garden design tool available. See r/Ceanothus for good info on growing native plants too.
