I’m looking to create a DIY kitchen island by placing an IKEA countertop over a freestanding cabinet. The idea is to keep it easy to take apart so I can move it from apartment to apartment. I want it to function as a kitchen counter, storage, and workstation.
Thinking of using an IKEA countertop like the HEMTRÄSK (61.5" L x 34" D x 1 1/8" thick) on top of something like the KNOXHULT base cabinet (48" L x 24" D x 36" H).
Has anyone tried something like this?
I’m looking to create an island using sektion base cabinets. I’m not able to permanently affix the cabinets to the floor and I also want the island to be moveable when needed (not likely daily, but still somewhat often). My thought is that I could create a solid base (plywood? I’ll likely need to do more research here) that matches the width and length of the cabinets when combined (likely approx. 36”x60”) and simply affix the base of the cabinet to the base (and then add some type of heavy duty casters). The cabinets (likely four in total), would be affixed to each other back to back and side by side. I’d add a counter top (something lightweight and economical) and use panels to cover the sides.
Is this a pipe dream idea? Has anyone ever done this with success? I’ve found one DIY video that is a lot more complicated in design, but is essentially the same. I just feel like I’d be able to find more than one example if it was actually a good idea.
