How to Create a Custom Ikea Kitchen Island - House with Home
September 27, 2023 - In order to get the cabinets to the necessary height, a platform was built from 2 x 4’s (actual dimensions being 1.5″ x 3.5″) with 1″ plywood on top to create a necessary “toe kick” height of 4.5″. I wanted the island to feel like piece of furniture, rather than have a recessed toe kick. To achieve this we built the platform at a depth (front of cabinet to back of cabinet) that allowed us to install our baseboards so they would sit flush with the cabinet doors. Did this help shed some light on the process for turning Ikea cabinets into a custom kitchen island?

r/ikeahacks on Reddit: Placing an IKEA Countertop Over a Freestanding Cabinet for a DIY Island?
May 13, 2025 -

I’m looking to create a DIY kitchen island by placing an IKEA countertop over a freestanding cabinet. The idea is to keep it easy to take apart so I can move it from apartment to apartment. I want it to function as a kitchen counter, storage, and workstation.

Thinking of using an IKEA countertop like the HEMTRÄSK (61.5" L x 34" D x 1 1/8" thick) on top of something like the KNOXHULT base cabinet (48" L x 24" D x 36" H).

Has anyone tried something like this?

Been there, done that. It is essential to reinforce the cabinet back, top inner frame and base inner frame so that the structure doesn't fall apart when someone bangs into it and/or it moves from being leaned on, etc. This is also important if your island has drawers, which when opened can leave the cabinetry unbalanced. I used 1x lumber as framing under the base (installed inside the kickplate area), and a similar frame at the top of the cabinet. I also added a full back panel. The island will move, unless you attach it to the floor. Ikea's Sektion/kitchen cabinets are not really designed for movement. And Ikea's cabinets need reinforcement to stay square and to not separate at the joints. Floor attachment is critical. In fact, Ikea sells a floor anchoring kit for just this reason. Ikea provides a guide for creating an island , which notably has solid tops versus the usual base cabinet "open" top. That is to help with overal stability.

Add 3/8IN plywood to the backs of the cabinet frames cut to tightly fit inside against the fiberboard back panel, and screw and glue it into place, then cover panels over that. Adds an *immense* amount of strength and rigidity. If you don't want to fasten this to the floor, don't use drawers, just doors and shelves. Or maybe just drawers at the bottom and a shelf and doors above? Tipping will be a real concern. And of course, you will need to make a base, as the plastic legs will be useless. Alternatively, IKEA does sell the stand-alone kitchen islands. But they aren't enclosed. Though the Rimforsa has a couple of drawers. MUCH easier to move too. The Tornviken is probably not much more than trying to roll your own.

r/IKEA on Reddit: Sektion Cabinets - Moveable Island?
April 3, 2024 -

I’m looking to create an island using sektion base cabinets. I’m not able to permanently affix the cabinets to the floor and I also want the island to be moveable when needed (not likely daily, but still somewhat often). My thought is that I could create a solid base (plywood? I’ll likely need to do more research here) that matches the width and length of the cabinets when combined (likely approx. 36”x60”) and simply affix the base of the cabinet to the base (and then add some type of heavy duty casters). The cabinets (likely four in total), would be affixed to each other back to back and side by side. I’d add a counter top (something lightweight and economical) and use panels to cover the sides.

Is this a pipe dream idea? Has anyone ever done this with success? I’ve found one DIY video that is a lot more complicated in design, but is essentially the same. I just feel like I’d be able to find more than one example if it was actually a good idea.
