Would this IKEA kitchen island/bar work well in my apartment?
Yes, I think it would look great. I'm not sure about the bar for hanging pots, that might make the space a little crowded, but the actual island would be perfect. You might also want to invest in a nice folding table and chairs for when you want to entertain, since you won't have a table any more. More on reddit.com

Placing an IKEA Countertop Over a Freestanding Cabinet for a DIY Island?
Been there, done that. It is essential to reinforce the cabinet back, top inner frame and base inner frame so that the structure doesn't fall apart when someone bangs into it and/or it moves from being leaned on, etc. This is also important if your island has drawers, which when opened can leave the cabinetry unbalanced. I used 1x lumber as framing under the base (installed inside the kickplate area), and a similar frame at the top of the cabinet. I also added a full back panel. The island will move, unless you attach it to the floor. Ikea's Sektion/kitchen cabinets are not really designed for movement. And Ikea's cabinets need reinforcement to stay square and to not separate at the joints. Floor attachment is critical. In fact, Ikea sells a floor anchoring kit for just this reason. Ikea provides a guide for creating an island , which notably has solid tops versus the usual base cabinet "open" top. That is to help with overal stability. More on reddit.com

Kitchen island without mounting to the floor?
Hi I am looking to do something similar: make a peninsula out of IKEA METOD base cabinets without mounting to floor. Can you please share whether you were able to accomplish this and what legs did you end up using? It would also be super helpful if you could perhaps kindly include a photo. Thanks! Get creative with your kitchen island - IKEA
The area by your front door can’t be too organized. After all, smooth entries and exits are a need we all share. The island makes it easy to tailor your departure – and still leaves room for more playful activities. Even if your kitchen island stays in the kitchen, it can be used in untraditional ways.

February 12, 2023 - Curious if anyone has done a narrow IKEA island? We are thinking about a narrow one for our ever evolving kitchen renovation. Due to space it can’t be more than 24” wide (there may be a couple inches to play with). Wondering how to do this with IKEA Sektion cabinets. Thanks!

Hi all, I am looking to add kitchen space for my small apartment, and am looking for a counter/island for a corner about 43.5" wide. I would prefer an island like the Tornviken or Vadholma, but they are too big or small to effectively use the space.

Would a Sektion base cabinet + countertop + metal legs be possible to do without many tools or experience? The price is cheaper than the Ikea islands too, and the hardest part seems to be cutting down the countertop.

Some specific questions:

  • Does the cabinet need to be attached to the wall, or can I leave it free-standing?

  • Will 4 legs be enough, or do I need 6 to support the center better?

  • I would like to put a microwave on the shelves - would that be too heavy?

I am a total noob so any help is appreciated!

r/ikeahacks on Reddit: Placing an IKEA Countertop Over a Freestanding Cabinet for a DIY Island?
June 15, 2025 -

I’m looking to create a DIY kitchen island by placing an IKEA countertop over a freestanding cabinet. The idea is to keep it easy to take apart so I can move it from apartment to apartment. I want it to function as a kitchen counter, storage, and workstation.

Thinking of using an IKEA countertop like the HEMTRÄSK (61.5" L x 34" D x 1 1/8" thick) on top of something like the KNOXHULT base cabinet (48" L x 24" D x 36" H).

Has anyone tried something like this?

Add 3/8IN plywood to the backs of the cabinet frames cut to tightly fit inside against the fiberboard back panel, and screw and glue it into place, then cover panels over that. Adds an *immense* amount of strength and rigidity. If you don't want to fasten this to the floor, don't use drawers, just doors and shelves. Or maybe just drawers at the bottom and a shelf and doors above? Tipping will be a real concern. And of course, you will need to make a base, as the plastic legs will be useless. Alternatively, IKEA does sell the stand-alone kitchen islands. But they aren't enclosed. Though the Rimforsa has a couple of drawers. MUCH easier to move too. The Tornviken is probably not much more than trying to roll your own.
