I had a similar setup that always felt awkward and I finally figured out how to fix it over the past couple of months. My room isn’t exactly like this but the general advice should remain the same. Get a straight couch (not L shaped) and pull it away from the wall a bit. It feels counterintuitive but leaving even just a few inches of space behind a couch can really open up a space. It’ll also give your curtains some room to breathe so they don’t look like the couch is crushing them so much. It’s hard to tell from these photos but if you have space I’d get a small cute chair in a different fabric from the couch. I’d either put it where the ottoman is now or on the opposite side of the room if it’ll leave you enough space to walk between the doorways. I’d also put a side table next to the couch. Maybe a cute vase and some coasters on it. This isn’t layout related but I’d also recommend replacing those cube shelves with a proper TV unit. It’ll look a lot cleaner. I recently bought a few IKEA Besta units and I’m very happy with them. They’re simple, clean, customizable, and most importantly very affordable. They were on sale when I bought them and I did a full 12’ wall of Besta units for about $300 IIRC. Answer from itsnottommy on reddit.com

IMO, you're definitely on the right path. You choose a smaller sofa instead of an overwhelming sectional, and you suggest possible changes that will work. As crazy as it might sound, sometimes going bigger in a small room actually makes it feel bigger. Get a larger unit on the TV wall - and consolidate your books, albums, turntable, etc. there. IDK what area you're in, but look at stores like Habtat for Humanity Re-Store, consignment stores, auctions, estate sales, and you can find a good piece at very little cost. If you sell the two pieces you have, you might end up with an even trade. If you keep the coffee table, it would look nice to bring that light wood color into other areas, like boxes or baskets on the shelves. Do you want to add any color? Window treatments? Any suggestions for my small living room?
Looks like you have enough room to turn the sofa 90 degrees. I would (if you could), if you wanted to make room for more seating. Put the TV on that little angled wall across from the windows, and then two chairs at the entry into this room. Always nice to mount the TV so you have flexibility with the space rather than it being a dedicated tv room. In small spaces like this, I prefer a smaller sized TV and I like to put them in a bookshelf because every room for the most part needs one large / tall piece of furniture to really anchor it. It's tough to do in small rooms, so doubling up on the function / form works well. If you can turn the sofa 90 degrees, then you can have whatever size coffee table you want. If you don't, then I'd suggest an ottoman & tray, nesting, or glass. Lamps. More on reddit.com

You will definitely need a smaller sofa unfortunately. I would place the TV by door as well. Having a TV in that tiny spot would look out of place. If you have no choice but to keep as is, I’d put lamp behind sofa and chase in other corner.

How To Make A Small Living Room Look Bigger: 8 Ways
1 month ago - When it comes to furniture pieces, opt for items that are multifunctional; a coffee table that opens up to house items or some small ottomans are great picks, says Houston, Texas-based designer Kara Childress. “Make sure not to load too many heavy pieces into the design,” adds Zandy Gammons, the founder of Miretta Interiors in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Use chests and cabinets sparingly.” · Think tall! “Drawing the eye upward can make a room feel taller and more spacious,” Skoloff says.
