I thought this was a really good design, not perfect, but I couldn't find anything in my AU market that was similar.
It had a strong metal frame, a strong hard lid and reasonably soft padding. Great to use as a seat in a pinch, and could support my 100kg+ weight so it worked as a stool.
The metal frame is really strong. The cover was fabric, which might seem like a con, but it actually makes it very easy to grab the unit from any angle, and hold it. A normal ottoman is bulky and doesn't really have grips or handles like that.
Because it's a storage unit, I can load it with stuff to give it some weight, so it stays put. The square frame means it has a lower center of gravity and does not tip easily (when loaded). I don't know if others have that problem but some light ottomans with inset feet, can tip fairly easily just rocking them with your feet.
The lid itself is ok. The cover is removeable but you can't buy replacements. I suppose it's easy enough to make replacements but no one does! I guess it wasn't a popular product and at the end of the day, it couldn't justify it's position in the ikea catalog.
Anyway, there's been basically nothing about this on the subreddit. Only 2 posts asking some unanswered questions.
If you can think of something similar, please do share.
The metal frame is the standout feature imo. You wouldn't use an ottoman as a step stool, but you can definitely do that with the bosnas.
