Hi, I've been out of the cpu space for a while and have been hearing so much about the upcoming Snapdragon X Elite processors. Can anyone explain to me, are these processors praised for being super powerful only when compared to mobile grade CPU's only, or do they actually stand up to desktop grade cpu's like the Intel Core I7-14700K?

Looking at geekbench results the new snapdragon chips seem to be roughly similar in performance to i5-14600. So very good given these are in laptops but not really revolutionary. What might be almost revolutionary is battery life, at least if the rumors are true.

Single-thread performance is likely going to be competitive with high-end Intel desktop CPUs, but the Intel halo products will likely be just a little faster, albeit at a huge cost in power/noise/heat. Core count is lower, so multithreaded performance will likely be more like top-end Intel laptop parts, but with better power/thermals. There's no magic to it. It's simply a more efficient design, fabricated with a better process.

I think the Snapdragon X segment of the livestream is over, so here are some cheeky things I noticed: *Mix of Linux and Windows for tests *Geekbench was the only CPU test used *3dMark wildlife extreme was the only GPU test used *No real world workloads (because of WoA emulation layer) *Also no gameplay at all *No mention of compatibility with dGPUs *Using Intel's 'most popular' chips, not the flagships for each TDP (1370p (14c)>1360p (12c) and 13900H>13800H) *No mention of pricing *No mention of transistor count *No mention of design wins or actual products, just 3 partnerships *Only showcasing 17 native non-Microsoft Arm apps (6 video/music streaming, 3 messengers, 8 photo editing) *Flip flopping between M2 for MT and M2 Max for ST *No details/disclaimer on AI slide, just vague 'PC laptop competition' The technical achievements seem very competitive, at least against last gen competitors. But im skeptical of a lot of things, like without knowing the transistor count, we dont know roughly how much these will cost OEMS, we dont know how many designs will actually use it, if Microsoft will actually improve WoA, etc. It's a long way away from launch, but I am hoping they answer these questions before then.
