I think the Snapdragon X segment of the livestream is over, so here are some cheeky things I noticed: *Mix of Linux and Windows for tests *Geekbench was the only CPU test used *3dMark wildlife extreme was the only GPU test used *No real world workloads (because of WoA emulation layer) *Also no gameplay at all *No mention of compatibility with dGPUs *Using Intel's 'most popular' chips, not the flagships for each TDP (1370p (14c)>1360p (12c) and 13900H>13800H) *No mention of pricing *No mention of transistor count *No mention of design wins or actual products, just 3 partnerships *Only showcasing 17 native non-Microsoft Arm apps (6 video/music streaming, 3 messengers, 8 photo editing) *Flip flopping between M2 for MT and M2 Max for ST *No details/disclaimer on AI slide, just vague 'PC laptop competition' The technical achievements seem very competitive, at least against last gen competitors. But im skeptical of a lot of things, like without knowing the transistor count, we dont know roughly how much these will cost OEMS, we dont know how many designs will actually use it, if Microsoft will actually improve WoA, etc. It's a long way away from launch, but I am hoping they answer these questions before then. If you have any apps that you absolutely need, verify that they work. Snapdragon X Elite is definitely not a great choice for gaming at this point. If this is your only machine for gaming, I would not recommend it for you. That said, I love my XPS 13 9345, which I mainly chose for its small size. The battery life is great and the fans usually stay off. I have a desktop PC to do the heavy lifting, so I value portability for my laptop. And for that, I think the Snapdragon X Elite is the best option. More on reddit.com

Hi! Looking to buy a new laptop for work - it will be used mainly for programming/coding, no gaming on it at all.
I currently have a laptop with an Intel i7, but it's not powerful enough for the work I'm doing. It's slow when I run IDEs (I mainly use VS Code) and is about 4 years old anyway.
Most laptops I'm looking at within my budget have either a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor or an Intel i9 processor. (and a few have an Intel Core Ultra 7 or an AMD Ryzen 7)
Most have around the same amount of RAM, usually about 16GB.
Does anyone have any experience with these processors and know which is better? It needs to be able to withstand hours of running IDEs.
Also, side question: I'm also planning on buying a cooling pad considering the more powerful processor will generate more heat. If anyone has any recommendations for a cooling pad, I'd really appreciate it! Ideally I don't wanna spend more than ~£50 it.

If you're using it primarily for work/programming, I would suggest an x86 laptop (AMD/Intel) to remove compatibility as a potential issue. This video shows what it's like to set up a Snapdragon laptop for development. Although most of it is relatively seamless, there still are some compatibility-related quirks like SQL Server not being supported (though there are workarounds ?) and the Intel having more workloads available in Visual Studio. Or, you might have cases like nvm which may not have an ARM Windows version, but can at least be used via WSL. Just Josh also did some testing here . A recurring theme seems that although there are often workarounds, the ARM binaries are either in a beta release or need to be downloaded manually from a website/Github, though this was from a while ago and the situation may be better now. Either way, I think Snapdragon laptops are excellent choices for people who either 1) use it like an iPad, or 2) know exactly what apps they need to run and can confirm they are supported. Otherwise, I personally would just go x86 for now.
