October 11, 1975 - But due to the amount of episodes the show is very uneven. It spawned some of the best and most quotable comedy sketches but the bad ones outnumber them by a wide margin. The average grade is around 4/10 but you can't grade it without taking the contribution to comedy into account that raises the grade. But the show is not worth seeing every week. By this seasons end, SNL will have 951 episodes. If you add the Mardi Gras special and the 15, 25, an 40 year anniversary specials that bumps up the total to 955, you add 22 from season 49 and 22 from season 50 and you get 999 episodes by the end of season 50 in May 2025. Saturday October 11, 2025 will be 50 years TO THE DAY that SNL first aired(October 11, 1975) SNL can and should air it's 1000th episode on that day! Somebody tell Lorne!

I’ve been perplexed by this as of late and can’t seem to find an answer. Why do they randomly take weeks off at a time? This seems to be a new development. Am I missing something?

in fall 2020 they did six episodes in a row leading up to the election. lorne and the cast have talked about how tired and burnt out they were by the end of that and they would never do six in a row ever again. they're still people, they have some breaks built into the schedule so they can chill or take meetings or work on less stressful projects.

Been like this forever as I recall. It’s basically 20 episodes over 7 months, give or take, each season. Maybe the first few seasons had more, idk I was too young to watch the first few years
