Just for context, I am currently in undergrad and am at a crossroads between continuing pre med and going to medical school and switching over to CS. I’ve taken a few CS classes at this point and enjoy it a lot so at the very least I would minor in it but if I decide to switch over to CS over the summer I will major in it. I know salary is not the sole reason to pursue any career and please do not think that this is the deciding factor in choosing between these professions, but it is something to consider. That being said, it seems like there is a much larger spread of salaries for software engineers compared to doctor’s salaries. Some of the salaries I’ve seen here already absolutely astound me. If you are making around 250k a year 7-8 years out of undergrad and stay there, you will probably end up doing better than most primary care doctors (who make about that much a year but went into debt for medical school and missed out on the earnings that the SE earned straight out of undergrad). I’ve even seen some posts claiming that they are making $400k 10 years out of undergrad which would even beat some specialists (again factoring in the debt and salary loss from being in school). How realistic is that kind of salary progression? What would you say is an average salary progression vs an above average salary progression for a software engineer?
Salary varies wildly by company and location. In my area (Small City in Indiana) the salary progression goes something like this: Entry Level: 50-70k Mid Level: 70-90k Senior: 90-150k Architect: 150+ You can make 200k+ even in a small city but it takes a long time. If you get into a FAANG company the progression looks something like this: Entry: 150k Mid: 250k Senior: 350k Architect: 500k Answer from Randommook on reddit.com
