I graduated in 2023 as a software engineer, right when the job market started slowing down.
Back then, the advice for new grads felt familiar. Build projects. Practice LeetCode. Clean up your resume. Apply consistently. It was hard, but at least the path felt clear.
About a year into my first job, I started noticing something felt off. Strong new grads with good projects and even internships were struggling to get interviews. People were doing the “right” things, but it wasn’t working the same way anymore.
That made me question how much of the advice we keep repeating to new grads is still relevant for the current market.
I ended up talking to a few people who got hired recently as software engineers at different companies, and their experiences felt very different from what you usually see online.
I’m curious how others here see it.
What part of the new grad software engineering job search feels the most broken right now?
Going into my senior year as a computer science major and plan to graduate this spring. I have applied to just over 100 entry level SWE related jobs so far with zero interviews as of now and a good amount of rejections. I am applying both locally and remote and I am also willing to relocate. Did not include my GPA as its not the best and I believe it would do more harm than good. Format is Jakes Resume template from overleaf. Would appreciate any feedback no matter how nitpicky, thank you!
