For the most part a soldering iron just solders. Their good for burning your hand on, drawing pictures on wood, melting nutserts in to plastic or welding 2 bits of plastic together, heating corroded fasteners, heat shrinking. Your aim shouldn’t be to use a soldering iron or any other tool, you dont wake up and decide you want to use a hammer today you wake and decide to put shelves up which requires a hammer. Have a look for a project something you will need, use, make life easier, something you can make better or cheaper than commercial options or something you can fix. Its a lot more rewarding than just soldering, you will learn more and you wont get bored.

May 23, 2025 - The heat will conduct through the lead, so you don’t have to touch the solder directly to the iron. The solder will start to melt. The flux inside the solder should make it spread out around the lead. Melt just enough to cover the lead. Repeat this for the other lead. This is called tinning, and it helps make a secure connection. Arrange the pieces you want to connect in the position you want them in, with the leads touching. You will likely want to use one or both clamps to hold the wires in place.
