What type of wood for indoor furniture- like tv stands/end tables?

If you know what you are doing and don't mind spending the money, then oak. If you know what you are doing and do mind spending a lot of money, then poplar or pine. And plywood can be a very cost effective way to make furniture, if you just trim all the exposed edges with solid wood. Another way to save money is look for old furniture from the 40's/50's/60's that people are giving away for free. It's usually solid wood and can be cut up and repurposed into other things. Most furniture after that point is just mdf/chipboard etc and is garbage. But I've made dozens of things by scavenging things from the side of the road, or things that are dumped off near Goodwill shops, or things they put out back of the little junky auction house down the road that they couldn't auction off. Old pianos also have a lot of good hardwood in them. Sometimes you see churches giving away pews when they remodel, those are like a goldmine. Usually realllllllly nice hardwood and lots of it, but they are difficult to transport and break down into smaller pieces. Keep an eye on the "free" category on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
