Setup at my house
I'm not confident the bottom is strong enough to hold the weight with logs long term, but either reinforcing it or getting the stand should do the trick (the bonfire sits a bit low otherwise)
Edit 1 year later: still going great! But I threw out the shield the table came with and got the solo stove shield. The original one wasn't holding up to the heat, warping, paint burning off, getting brittle...

I'm looking to purchase either the surround surface or lid for my new setup. I know they have slightly different functions, but has anyone tried using the surround surface in place of the lid (when embers are still warm)?

The lid kills the fire. The surround is used during the fire before the lid. Am I missing something?

I have both. When the fire is down to embers, I place the lid on. In the morning, once it’s cooled, I place the surface OVER the lid. Can you have just the lid, sure. It it leaves a gap between the surround and the lid and it’s obvious you have a fire pit in there. With the Surface, it looks like a full fledged table. It’s a little expensive but in the grand scheme of things if you get use out of it, worth it.
