Should I buy the Canon R6 Mark ii OR Sony A7IV?
My thoughts as someone who shoots families, portraits and weddings and owns an R6: it depends on your budget. The R6 is incredible and everything I would ever need in a camera (except when I shoot wildlife for fun, but that's for another day). Here's the big BUT: Canon doesn't allow for third party lenses for its' full frame mirrorless cameras. This is a pretty big deal to me. I usually like to go for L series primes and third party zooms because I am not made of money and my primary job is not photography (though I do a fair number of paid photography jobs year-round). If I went back to 2020 when I switched to mirrorless, and you told me I would be waiting at least 4 years before I had access to RF mount 3rd party lenses, I would have jumped ship to Sony or Nikon in a heartbeat. December 4, 2025 - I know ergonomics are a personal, but at a point... they're just bad.Ignoring video and appreciating the well balanced photo specs of this A7V, the one major downside left is ergonomics: I tried one out (again) this weekend and I agree with you, I almost cannot use it.

Hey guys! Anyone here who has tried the Sony A7V AND Canon R6 Mark III?

I'm between cameras and brands and have to decide between the two of them with the benefits and weakness of the lens system and the possible upgrades for stills/video.

Is there any clear reccomandation after using them both? Any "hidden" pros or cons that the youtube videos won't show for each of them. I haven't found a good comparison video on Youtube.

In detail, a typical use will be to make content for social media. A lot of stuff will be with the iphone, but I need something versatile for both video and photo. I'll typically buy something like 16-35,24-70 and 70-200 and maybe a prime for low light. I don't need it all right away.

I think the glass would be quite comparable for both sony and canon, but sony has of course both third party options and also stuff like 24-50.

It's a hard decision this, but I am trying to focus most on the best hybrid camera itself and maybe the upgrade options for a camera number 2 eventually.

Ibis (good, not wobbly), log options, dual iso (not too much noise) etc. And does canon have anything compared to s-cinetone? Would it be "neutral"?

Edit: Anyone knowing if Canon R6 mark iii has anything like S-cinetone? What is the closest? Flat, but not log.

Thanks!

Honestly it looks like Sony is better (except lack of few video features) Sony have stacked sensor (so less rolling shutter, blackout free, more frequent AF sampling which results in faster AF for moving targets) vs Canon that is still non stacked so to get this fps on E-shutter it degrades from 14-bit to 12-bit (degrading image quality) pre-capture is much better on sony - you can configure both fps and time of pre-capture - on Canon it's always 0.5 sec at max fps (so additional 20 photos every time you use pre-capture) Sony have much better battery management - 630 photos using evf vs 390 for r6iii based on CIPA standard (given - on both cameras in normal usage you probably will do more photos - but drastically more on sony) in mechanical shutter mode Sony have DGO - meaning it combines 1st and 2nd iso gain and reads them ant the same time to improve Dynamic Range - so good in fact that is practically at the theoretical limit of dynamic range for FF Canon does something that I personally hate - for some iso it applies in camera noise reduction to RAW files on the other hand Canon have both open gate and raw recording which Sony misses (no idea if they will add sth with firmware update but it's hard to count for it) Sony have less problems with overheating in video (most tests I saw finished after battery died in like 2h in 4k 60p - even saw someone record for 6h with dummy battery) - r6iii is usually fine up to ~30 min of overaampled 4k video

r/Cameras on Reddit: The upcoming Sony A7V vs Canon R6 Mark III
November 13, 2025 -

I have a SONY A6400 today, and will upgrade within the next few months.

My plan was to go with the Sony A7V, once it is released. If specs turns out decent. But what about the new Canon R6 Mark III?

Faster burst rate, pre-capture. Whats not to like?

Why should I stick with Sony (?), other than the fact that there are more lenses to choose from.

How is the AF on these Canons compared to Sonys A7 range?

I shoot mostly wildlife/birds, nature and landscape. Mixed up with city etc. once in a while. Ive done little video to this day, but might be more in the future.

Debate!

February 8, 2021 - The Sony has a higher-resolution sensor, but the Canon performs a little better in low light. Both can handle advanced video work, with internal 10-bit 4k at up to 60 fps, though the Sony imposes a significant crop on 4k / 60 fps video.

r/Cameras on Reddit: Deciding Sony A7V or Canon R6 III
January 4, 2026 -

Budget: 3k but irrelevant - deciding between 2 bodies Country: EU Condition: New only Type of Camera: mirrorless Intended use: hybrid shooting If photography; what style: travel so mix of landscape, street, portrait If video what style: travel What features do you absolutely need: generally leaning towards more video needs than photography at the moment What features would be nice to have: Portability: Irrelevant Cameras you're considering: Sony Alpha7V and Canon R6 III Cameras you already have: Old DSLR and action cameras, I do use slow motion so 60fps is absolutely needed and 120fps is used sometimes

Hello everyone, I'm traveling a lot and like to get more into travel video making and photography. I mostly just use a GoPro now but there are many limitations obviously. I'd choose a more video camera but photography is something I've enjoyed in the past too so these 2 hybrids came out as the best options. I am also planning (eventually) to get into underwater video making when scuba so low light is quite important but not absolute priority.

I'm considering Sony A7V and Canon R6 III, I do not have any usable lenses so system change is not a consideration. I've watched all comparison videos but it's difficult to tell sponsored videos from real reviews. What I consider Sony pros:

  • stacked sensor - no blackouts and better EVF

  • less overheating

  • lens availability

Sony cons for me:

  • only 4k - not much crop in post

  • 120fps crop

  • no open gate (not truly sure how useful it might be)

What I consider Canon pros:

  • open gate - I do shoot for both YT and IG but it's probably not making that big a difference

  • high res - I really enjoy this on my GoPro to have ability to crop and still have 4k video

Canon cons for me:

  • less good EVF and blackouts when shooting

  • unstacked sensor but possibly that's not going to be very different from A7V

  • overheating maybe

  • IBIS seems wobbly in some reviews

  • only Canon lenses (not very sure how much of an impact this might have in the future for me)

The high res on Canon and Sony's crop on 120fps are leaning me towards Canon but the lens availability and choosing a system makes me want to choose Sony.

Can anyone please give me their point of view based on my needs? I don't know how much e.g. lens availability is more important compared to high res video availability.

Thank you

You basically hit the tradeoffs of both systems right now. Sony is steering you towards their cinema line if you want more video capabilities. Personally I switched from Canon EF -> RF (for a short bit) to Sony. Sony has nailed the compact camera body and some of their first party new lenses are amazing in quality and size, which mattered for me traveling. I don’t think you would regret either, at least not without trying both for awhile.

IMO, the A7V is slightly better for working professionals even though its video is inferior to the R6iii on paper. R6iii might better benefit someone using the camera more as a hobby. A7V has 1-2 more stops of dynamic range and a faster sensor than the R6iii along with more advanced AF performance. It also won't overheat even with the most demanding settings. Sony's lenses are noticeably smaller and lighter than the Canon equivalent which may not matter for photography, but, can be very beneficial for video when working with gimbals...I once worked with an R6ii using a 28-70 f/2.0 and hated every second of it. I said the A7V may be better for working professionals because its 4K video is great for what it is even if it is not industry leading. The problem I see with cameras like the R6iii in regards to video is that almost all of the most talked about features consume MASSIVE amounts of data. If you're filming multiple times a week, you are going to be going through 20TB hard drives every month. No client is asking for deliverables above 4K and so IMO, usability of the camera is more important than numbers.
