Sony's Mirrorless Cameras
As powerful as a pro camera, but smaller and easy to use, they turn your everyday shots into beautiful movies and photography to both see and feel. Arresting images don't wait for a second chance, especially in challenging light. A Sony mirrorless camera, with far larger image sensor and bright lenses, makes better use of the light you have.

I want to buy a sony camera, but which one? im a beginner
What is your budget? Here is a rundown on the different lines of Sony mirrorless cameras. A9 series - Sports optimized models with very fast shooting speeds and 25MP (ish) sensors. Not for you. A1 series - Flagship models. Very good fast sensors at 50MP. Expensive. Not for you. A7S series - Video optimized and low light 12MP sensors. Not for you. A7R, A7CR series - Much higher resolution sensors (61MP in the latest versions). Not great at fast moving things cause you can get bending in the image as it takes a while to read the huge sensor. Maybe for you, but probably not a great idea. A7CR is compact but very similar to A7Rv. A7C, A7Cii - Compact full frame sensor series. The A7Cii has better autofocus than any of the current A7 series. A7 series - Consumer level full frame sensor. These cameras are great but don't have all the bells and whistles that the other series have. Everyone is waiting for the A7v to come out as the current A7iv doesn't have the latest autofocus. Image stabilization shows up in the A7ii. a6x00 series - Compact camera with APSC sensor size. The smaller sensor means your lens focal length gets a 1.5x multiplier (50mm looks like a 75). a6500 and newer have image stabilization. I'm personally not a fan of APSC cameras but they do have their advantages. Especially if weight is a priority. The smaller sensor means that longer lenses are also much smaller. But APSC lenses tend to be less expensive consumer lenses and lower quality. So smaller sensor with budget lenses usually means less satisfying images. But many people love them so don't rule them out. ZV-E10 series - Vlogging optimized APSC camera. Not for photography. Not for you. If you like the compact vintage look you should consider the A7C. A used one is going to be not much more than a similar APSC model. A7 series is probably where you want to be. Buy the one you can afford. You don't need the best autofocus or video so really any of them will be good as used. But try to go with at least A7ii or newer for the image stabilization. Just make sure you check the shutter count of the camera you are looking at. The mechanical shutter will eventually fail, it can be repaired. Getting one with a lower shutter count will let it last a while and then you can resell it for probably close to what you paid for it. The A7ii is designed to survive 200,000 shutter actuations. If you're lucky you can find one used for a lot of video or not used much and it will be low. There are lots of videos on YouTube that show how to check shutter count (basically upload a pic from the camera to a website that tells you. It's in the Exif data.) More on reddit.com

Explain to me like I'm 5 - which Sony camera to buy
Full frame benefits: shallower depth of field, better low light performance, better ergonomics (more manual buttons and dials) Apsc benefits: smaller bodies and lenses, less expensive too, more "reach" (because the field of view is 1.5x cropped in vs full frame) Now, the model series... A7 III and IV (avoid previous ones): great all-purpose full frame cameras, good for both video and photo. The IV has better autofocus, better video specs, jumps to 33mp from 24, has a fully articulating screen and the newer menu system. A7C: this is the "compact" series; basically an a7 III with better autofocus, fewer controls and a smaller body. A7R III, IV, V: High resolution sensors, primarily geared toward photography. The V has the newer menu system, the newest AF and a screen that flips and tilts in all directions. The IV has the same 61mp sensor as the V, the III has 42 mp. A7S III: primarily geared toward video and low light shooting. 12mp and it can basically see in the dark. ZV-E1: same as above except with no viewfinder, fewer manual controls and a smaller body. A9 & a9II: photo caméras optimized for high speed burst shooting. A1: very expensive camera which combines the best of all the above models (except the screens). A6000: APSC camera with 24mp. Older model with not-so-great colour science if shooting in JPG. Only shoots 1080 video. Battery life isn't great. A6300: same as above but with better weather sealing and 4k video. A6500: same as above but with in body stabilization. A6100: replaces the a6000 and shoots 4k video, has better autofocus and a screen that flips upwards 180°. A6400: same as the 6100 but adds weather sealing and picture profiles for shooting video. ZV-E10: basically the same as above with no viewfinder, a smaller body, fewer manual controls and some unique video features. A6600: same as the 6400, adds in body stabilization and does not have a built in flash. It uses the bigger battery of the full frame bodies which significantly improves battery life. A6700: replaces the 6600. Adds a new 26mp sensor, same autofocus as a7R V, more video options (eg 4k 60fps, 120fps, etc) and a front control dial on the grip. I think thats as concise as I can make it. I may have missed a thing or two. Edit: added some things for the a7IV More on reddit.com

Budget mirrorless camera: Sony a5000 or Canon EOS M10? Any other suggestion?

I don't know anything about an a5000, but I do have an a5100. Bought it new several years ago for I dunno how much money (I forget, but it wasn't a lot). I now have several other cameras besides the a5100, but I have no plans to sell my a5100. I'll use it til it drops. Partly because I love the little thing, and partly because I just wouldn't get a lot of money if I sold it used. They're available for maybe $250US and up, with kit lens, used (look at eBay?), though Sony still makes new ones.

Sony makes "better and more expensive" cameras, but no one will be able to tell pics taken with an a5100 apart from the same taken with any of the a6xxx cameras. They are all APS-C cameras with 24mp, though some will shoot 4K video, some have viewfinders, and so on. I don't feel any reason to "upgrade" to one of Sony's other APS-C cameras. Happy with the one I have.

The 4 Best Mirrorless Cameras of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter
3 weeks ago - The closest other Sony option is the a6400, but that model doesn’t have the same level of subject tracking or video capture, and it still uses Sony’s old menu system, which is more convoluted than the company’s newer, color-coded, slightly less labyrinthine menus. ... This camera might be the best value in full-frame mirrorless cameras, with fantastic-looking images, impressive video, and tracking AF that shoots well above its class.

August 23, 2023 -

Photography is my hobby, even though I'm not a tech expert. I've always used pro equipment thanks to photography-savvy family. So for my own I want to skip the beginner cameras. The Sony sales squad always leave me so confused. Any tips to choose a good fit? I already watch every youtube review and read sansmirror and still don't get it. I want to take pics/vids of my kids growing up. (my pic attached) Thanks :) ** Edit my budget can go up to 5K usd and the shop said go for alpha V.

My 2-cents: get an ⍺7IV and FE 24-70 GM II. The ⍺7IV is not a beginner camera (not at all!). It's the most balance option between photography and videography. Or... wait for the ⍺7cII that might possibly be announced very soon. It is said to be a compact version of ⍺7IV.
