I just installed the XG Free Home on an old UTM 120 last week. Just download the software ISO from here and write the image to a USB stick, I personally use Etcher for this. When you boot go into the BIOS (can't remember if it's F2, DEL, etc.), change the boot device priority to use the USB stick, and follow the installation instructions on screen. I would suggest taking the hard drive currently installed out, setting it aside, and installing to a different drive, so if you decides it was a mistake you can go back. While you're at it you could even bump the memory up to the Home edition limit of 6GB. More on reddit.com

I would highly recommend spinning up an XG VM if you can to play with it before switching. UTM and XG have a few similarities, but they're quite a bit different. UTM felt a lot easier to manage to me. The shared objects were amazing, and while there's still a bit of that in XG, it's not anywhere like it was in UTM, which is sad. Firewall rules are similar to set up, so no big difference there. Web filtering and Application filtering are quite a bit different. Web Filtering I think I like a bit more in XG than UTM, but they both still feel awkward. Application Filtering just feels like a mess to me. S2S VPN is probably a bit easier to set up, as it's all mostly on one screen now, but you do lose some of the object reuse based stuff as I mentioned above. The client VPN also seems buggy. Our users ran into a lot of issues with the client disconnecting and reconnecting at intervals. It wasn't very seemless, and we ended up switching to a separate OpenVPN solution. More on reddit.com

I have been running the Sophos UTM (use to be Astaro UTM) for several years now and it's a solid firewall.

I have it running on my ESXi box with a 60/25 connection that sometimes reaches almost 70 down.

The Sophos UTM is probably the one you would be more interested in as it is more mature and has almost all the features of the full blown version except a couple things most people at home have no need for or use. It does come with HTML5 VPN and has for a while actually.

The Sophos XG is their attempt at a new firewall and so far, have not heard good things about it at all, so I would steer clear of that product.
