Sophos XG Firewall "Home" Edition | Hardware Canucks
Hello all, I decided to do a quick (experimented for 4 hours) review on this oddball proprietary router / firewall 'firmware', Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition. TL;DR: The only thing "Home" about it is the non-commercial license clause - it's really a small/medium business firewall product. I... More on hardwarecanucks.com

Sophos Firewall Home Edition questions
the 4 core and 6GB ram is enough for home use. Using old box (i5 5500U 2 core) and 6GB ram can handle 1gbps connection without any issues (with all those filtering thing). I use sophos xg home to filter and schedule my kids online activity (it was really useful during lock down period). The DPI is really good. More on reddit.com

Sophos UTM for home - sustainable?
I've been using one at home for close to 7 years, I believe. It's always been free with the 50 device limit. It got its roots from Astaro, which was also free, IIRC, so I don't see them changing that model. I use mine with a home sub to the antivirus and it works quite well for a family of 5. Sophos XG Firewall "Home" Edition | Hardware Canucks
May 24, 2018 - I've used the Sophos SG and XG series appliances. The SG appliance firmware is called "UTM" and the XG firmware is completely different. When the XG series came out there was a huge backlash from the community about how it had gone so much in the direction of user friendly gui, and was too dumbed down.

July 2, 2015 - Some low-power Intel Atom solutions may work for this application, but due to the number of options available with this UTM, a minimum of an I3 processor is recommended to be able to push throughput with advanced services such as IPS and AV – I chose the Supermicro SYS-5018D-MF ... To get started, you will need to request a Home Edition license from Sophos – do that here.

r/sophos on Reddit: Sophos Firewall Home Edition questions
February 6, 2023 -

Hello. I am interested in Sophos for home use and I have some questions.

  1. Can the home edition use more than 2 network interfaces?

  2. Is the home edition limited in what network inteface chips/cards it can use?

  3. Is there a way around the 4 core & 6 gig limitation as I would like to use a more robust system?

  4. What anti-virus engine does it use?

  5. Can one buy a used Sophos appliance and install the Firewall Home edition onto it?

  6. Is the home edition a full blown software solution that would be as powerful as if one were to purchase an appliance that came with the software for business?

Anything else you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

May 30, 2024 - The only downer from our point of view is the lack of support for the “Sophos Firewall Home Edition” on a Sophos appliance. It’s true that the Sophos Firewall already provides many functions free of charge with the base license, but that’s not enough for the real geeks.

Just to be clear Sophos UTM is a Linux OS install, it has nothing to do with Windows firewall. Its running as a standalone appliance on its own hardware. Home UTM is just for home use, limited to 50 IPs with all the features ON, Essential Firewall is the “free for business use” firewall element of the UTM. Same thing Linux install on hardware or a VM.

So all you need is the Home UTM product running on a PC with dual NIC. You are wasting your money on an SSD here as most consumer SSDs aren’t suited to the read/write pattern on a UTM device, only do this if noise is an issue but a spinning disk is probably better in this setup. An SSD will have zero impact on performance

Be careful which PCI card you get, not all are supported. An intel one is your best bet. Realtek if you are on a budget

There is a huge amount of information on astaro.org the community forum including guides to build hardware, supported devices and advice on setup

Hey Everybody,

I am looking to set up a machine running Sophos UTM Home Edition and Sophos UTM Essential Firewall at my home and was looking for some advice/guidance on how best to do this. Just to give you an idea as to what systems would be involved, I currently have 2 computers (soon there will be a 3rd), 2 tablets, 2 smartphones, and 3 gaming/multimedia units that all would go through this to the internet. It isn’t a rush, as this is just a project to get done as time is available. I am likely going to be using an old computer from work that would otherwise be recycled and I guess my first question that needs answered is can both of these be installed on the same machine, is that the best way to go, or should I use two computers running them separately?
