Bonjour! I have just started learning French with the aid of Rosetta Stone (also taking a course at the Alliance Française located in my city) and I cannot differentiate the pronunciation of the following two sentences I have come across in the language learning software:
L'homme est sur la voiture. L'homme est sous la voiture.
Should I be slightly emphasizing the (French) 'r' in the word 'sur'? Or is there no difference in pronunciation at all when one reads both sentences? Thanks a lot!

The vowel is also different. sur is pronounced [sy:ʀ] (I can't give an English like spelling, the sound does not exist there) sous is pronounced [su] (more or less like soo). The difference in vowel is quite audible to a French ear. Note that we have also su which is pronounced [sy] and sourd which is pronounced [su:ʀ]. Make an "eee" sound, like in "beet." See how your lips are a sort of smile? Keep making that sound, but round your lips into a kissy face. Voila, you're now making the sound in "sur" which I call "short u." Your tongue should be kind of tense. This is [y] in the IPA. Now, say oooooooooo like you're a ghost. It's almost like you're just exhaling and there's very little tension. That's "ou" which is what I call "long u." This is [u] in the IPA. Edit: I call them long and short u because for some reason americans find it easier to hold the [u] sound than the [y] sound, in my experience. Maybe it's because tight articulatory tension-short and loose articulatory tension-long is the assumption. It does not reflect how long you hold them out.
