These changes are illustrated in the maps below that show different claims on the land through the years, both by people (on the land ownership maps) and usage (in the maps showing agriculture and expanding urban development). Originally inhabited by Ohlone people, the land in the South Bay became a shifting patchwork of colonization by Spanish, Mexican, and American settlers.

September 9, 2025 - The South Bay Cities region includes the cities of Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Los Angeles (Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro and Wilmington), Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance, Westchester, and some unincorporated areas of the County of Los Angeles.

June 25, 2024 - There is no precise legal or geographic boundary between the South Bay and the Peninsula — the Peninsula roughly coincides with the borders of San Mateo County, although it also includes the northwestern Santa Clara County cities of Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Altos. The rest of Santa Clara County is considered part of the South Bay. Coming south from the East Bay, you enter the South Bay upon entering Milpitas. 10 hours ago - At the time of colonization, the Ohlone peoples in the Bay Area primarily lived on the San Francisco Peninsula, in the South Bay and in the East Bay, and the Miwok primarily lived in the North Bay, northern East Bay, and Central Valley. Ohlone villages were spread across the Peninsula, East Bay, South Bay, as well as further south into the Monterey Bay area.
