Looking for kitchen design thoughts/suggestions for a very unique space
Hey OP, I’m an interior designer, specializing in kitchens with 25 years experience. If this were my kitchen, I’d build a false wall in the current kitchen to make this design feel more seamless and bring it out to the same depth as the current dining room wall. Your sink and ovens are too far away and too detached from the sink. This would allow you to join your island, centre the sink. You could change the right side of the island into seating only. If that’s not appealing to you, consider doing an L-shaped kitchen in the original kitchen, and treating the addition more like a butler’s pantry? Add a sink, make it your coffee / clean up / storage station. Just my 2 cents! More on reddit.com

Ideas for Making a Small Kitchen Cozy?
These kitchens are huge compared to my own. I feel that my kitchen is functional and "cozy", because I designed it to be that way. (I spend a fair amount of time there.) It is clean. Everything is purooprtutate to the size of the room. Storage is a premium. So I suppose I have utilized creative storage. My only suggestion is to gather ideas, if you'd like, but understand that your kitchen, has to be uniquely yours. It has to function for you. You have to feel good when you're in it. Small combined living room/kitchen - Is there a better way to lay out the space? Would another couch shape work better?
Updated floor plan! Photos Below: https://imgur.com/a/0lyrIF0 I've tried taking some of your suggestions, particularly to get rid of the sectional & replace it with a sofa. I also loved folks' ideas on opening up the room by changing the couch orientation & using swivel chairs so that folks sitting in the "living room" space can also face the kitchen space while we're cooking/entertaining. The table is supposed to mimic an "extendable" table that we could extend into the "living room" space if we're hosting company. One piece I'm still thinking about is the wall with the console table & painting. It doesn't feel like a great use of space, so maybe a book case or shelving could be cool, but I'm undecided. If you've got additional feedback, feel free to share! We haven't purchased any furniture yet (we're starting from scratch with this room), so everything is fair game. More on reddit.com

June 4, 2024 -

Just bought a 1950's house, still getting settled in. The kitchen needs redone, and we have a contractor that came up with a design we like, just looking for any thoughts/suggestions. It's a very unique space. The house had an addition done in 2001, which partially knocked out an exterior wall of the kitchen and dining room to add on more space for the kitchen, and a living room. The previous owners intended to redo the kitchen with that addition but never got around to it. There is still a few feet of the exterior wall separating the two kitchen areas, and that needs to remain as it's load bearing. There's a laundry room and 2 garages behind the kitchen areas, so there can not be any windows unfortunately. The walls of the two kitchen areas are not flush, one is a foot or so further back. So it's going to be a bit unusual, but I think the design we have is pretty good. Thoughts?

Smart & Stylish Small Kitchen Ideas
If cabinets are the same hue as the walls, your eye groups them into one large background and the kitchen looks larger. Choose bright paint colors that reflect and bounce light to make the room feel cleaner and bigger. Go with taller-than-standard upper cabinets to draw your eye upward, and make the ceiling look higher. This does more than create an optical illusion, though. Maxing out the cabinets also adds more storage by using every square inch of space.

Hi op! I agree the photos in your link all show very big kitchens (none are anywhere close to 8x10?)! But I love your goal of a functional and cozy small kitchen as that’s what we have too. Step one was really really narrowing down our cooking needs to what items we absolutely must have and use daily/weekly. Depending on your cooking style this can vary quite a bit and luckily we were able to pare down what needed to be stored in our kitchen a ton! We then re-housed less used items to separate areas (storage in our dining room for things we only need at the table, a separate bar/coffee/tea area that homes all our drinkware minus basic water cups in the family room, and pantry in the garage which luckily is off our kitchen). Another tip for functionality is having what I call “work zones” where everything we need for one task is in one area. So our cutting boards live on the counter next to the stove and across from the fridge and sink. The knives are stored in the drawer under that counter. Our cooking utensils and pots and pan live next to the stove as well. I have a stand mixer on another counter and baking tools in the drawers underneath it. We chose to put in a narrow spice drawer next to the stove as well and a narrow drawer next to the sink for cleaning supplies. We opted for all lower cabinets except under the sink to be drawers because for us the tradeoff between usability and storage space was worth it. I also recommend warm cabinet and task lighting! And another great thing about small kitchens is it can be more affordable to choose nicer materials! We went for lovely maple cabinets and glass doors for our uppers. We also chose a very decorative backsplash tile because it covers such a small area. All our hardware is fairly decorative and bronze with copper highlights (pulls and knobs can be expensive but less so with fewer cabinets!). Don’t be afraid to choose finishes you really love. And then try to plan realistic ways to keep the counter clear -we found hanging things on the walls adds a cozy factor without causing visual clutter for us. Lastly I agree choosing textiles that flow well with the space is key. Our kitchen towels are the same color as our pots, pan, and stand mixer. We have a valence on our kitchen window that matches the backsplash on the opposite wall. Our kitchen mats match the floor. Anywho sorry for the long comment hope this helps op!
