CA Specialty Plates
Hello, So with Specialty plates (in my experience) have only been able to process after the vehicle is licensed under your name (specifically for sequential plate numbers). Now with the dealership, they'll (most likely) take care of all the paperwork, so you may need to wait for the new standard license plates to arrive. If you're doing a sequential plate, you have to give the information pertaining to the car (License plate number, Vin, etc). If the plate is a non-sequential, fully custom plate (custom lettering that you want), then (I believe) you can begin that now but it does take a lot longer. **CORRECTION** You can NOT begin the custom plate application (either on the California Department of Motor Vehicle's website or by filling out a form REG17) until AFTER receiving your standard plates and having the vin number of the vehicle. My apologies for the initial mistake. However, from my last conversation with the DMV (and AAA), the 60s legacy plates (yellow on Black, if that's the one you're referring to) are temporarily unavailable in the standard sequential configuration. Not sure when that will change, but at this very moment, they are not available. Now I've not really dealt with Leased cars before, but if your registration expires after your lease contract date is up, I do not believe you need to pay for the registration (but I could be wrong). For the fees, you will need to pay to order the plates on top of the registration fee ($50 to get the plates and $40 per year for registration). If you want to forfeit the plates, they will need to follow the car and the dealership will fill out paperwork to terminate the lease contract and take back the car (thus ending liability for you on the car). Not sure if I covered everything you were looking for but let me know if you have any further questions. Also, I do want to note that I have no affiliation to the California Department of Motor Vehicles or AAA. This is solely based on my experience alone. I would only use my information provided to supplement additional research, verify the validity with representatives of either the CA DMV or AAA, and proceed with caution. More on reddit.com

[California] Do non-special interest / personalized license plates have an annual fee?
Of course. It's not a one-time cost. Other people in the future may want it. If you want to retain the rights to it, you have to pay to retain it. More on reddit.com

May 29, 2023 -

Hi all,

My car lease is about to end in one month and I have specialty plates on them right now. Ideally, I'd like to get new Specialty Plates for my new car that I will be getting once my current lease agreement ends. My renewal fee is also in one month (usually in the mail) and my question is........Should I place an order for the specialty plates since it takes about 4-6 weeks?

Also, am I paying for two fees (one for the new speciality plates placed online and one for the registration when I get my new car?) Also the plates that I have right now, do I need to pay the renewal fee for that as well since it arrives in the mail?

I do plan on letting go the specialty plates I have right now but idk when I should release them. Do I forfeit the specialty plates when my lease ends with the dealership or do I let the DMV know that the plates are no longer under my title? Please advise and thank you 😅
