I’m moving on from a Maytag that is troublesome and have my eye on a SQ TR7.
I read great reviews and then read nightmare reviews. Our local appliance shop swears by SQ.
So…what’s your SQ experience? Are the negative reviews outliers or are there legitimate problems with SQ?
Thanks!
Beyond happy with our new purchase. We were tired of our washer and dryer having problems despite only being a few years old. They are definitely built like a tank. I am impressed at the speed of these cycles compared to our old lg front loads. I can’t get over how quiet the washer is on a full spin cycle. Only downside I found was the lack of black options. The Mrs was dead set on having black which limited us to the 7 models.

After 11-12 years my basic GE Top loader washer died. The motor needs a start capacitor most likely, but the transmission/tub bearing makes noise, and it's leaking slightly out the bottom of the tub, so it was time for a replacement.
Went to the local appliance store, after calling a few in the area and ended up buying a SpeedQueen TR7. It was $100 more then the TC5 and it came with a 7 year warranty instead of 5 year, and more importantly in stock. It wasn't cheap by any means. We wanted the TR series after reading reviews of it being kinder on thin, synthetic clothes which we wear quite a few of. The salesman said the electronics actually have fewer warranty claims then the old mechanical switches of the TC series due to where they put them, a little hard to believe but plausible.
In the days since the purchase before delivery here I have read a little more, the Consumer reports updated review of the TR7 isn't great. It does have better than expected reliability which is what we wanted I suppose, but cleaning performance isn't great. We know to not use eco mode, which is fine. I guess the other thing that bothers me is the "small" tub at 3.2ft. We just got married and thats the size of our old machine which is fine for two, but my concern is if we have a kid or two will we regret buying a smaller machine for the long haul? Or do you just get over it and do more loads?
Is there anyone who has used both that can chime in on which they prefer? I ordered a TC5 today but heavily debated the TR7 and am still second guessing which I would prefer. I can always change the order if I change my mind before Wednesday. We are a family of 5 with two small boys who love to play outside and play sports (aka stains). We live on a farm so some very dirty clothes but I also wash a lot of delicates. I’m coming from an old school GE top loader with agitator that is 20 years old and been problem free until now.
Hey all,
New to Speed Queen, staring at a checkout screen, need some quick help!
Lots and lots of debate on this topic. I've read many of the posts out there. Most of them are 2+ years old, and seem to be biased based on what the poster personally has.
- TC seems to be 'better' in terms of cleaning power (more for heavily soiled) and simplicity (yet the knobs are still run by a circuit board), no lid lock (even though TR7 is just a brief pause) but also more loud and rough on the clothes.
- TR is more modern and up to date (not the best looking device out there), doesn't clean as well, and had a bad rep for a bit when the model was initially launched. Yet better warranty, more features, quiter and no transmission to repair.
Based on what I've seen overall, TC5 is more for the loyalists and purists. TR7 seems to get more love from service techs and general users.
Would love any/all feedback.
edit: pulled the trigger on the TR7 after talking to SQ directly and getting some feedback from them.
My old Maytag perfroma finally beat the dust after 20 years of service.
Now going through the rabbit hole of interweb; I decided upon Speed Queen TC5000WN VS Maytag MVWP575GW VS LG WM3900HWA
Later I took out Maytag MVWP575GW from the race as 2019 and later SQ TC5 changed the agitation action. I also read the that model of Maytag 575 were eating up the gearboxes as it has a plastic gear box unlike SQ has aluminium, Maytag 575 has a hanging suspension which is also not desired. One good thing though it has dual action agitator, push and pull unlike SQ TC5. Any-who, the Maytag was out.
Reason I was considering LG WM3900HWA because it had fairly good reviews even from the person who complained about the 2018 SQ. Best washer pick from Consumer reports and Wirecutter. And the LG's are "supposedly" better built front load washer with good wash results.
Also Costco has deal going on LG WM3900HWA $779.00 plus free installation and haul away. + 2% executive + 2 % Costco Citi card cash back + Additional 1 year Manufacture warranty + 2 Year Citi card warranty (total of 4 years)
I was dead set on SQ TC5000WN, but when I saw the 2020 TR7 Serial Number: 200306XXXX (March 2020?) with 7 years of warranty, it got me thinking again..
How better is the 2020 TR7 against 2018 TR7's?
I found this : " The Speed Queen TR7 washing machine received a significant update early 2019 in response to reported problems on the normal (eco) cycle. Customers reported that although the normal cycle ran fast in about 40 minutes, the cleaning performance was lackluster at best. Speed Queen changed the wash action program to provide additional agitation and added extra time to achieve better clean. "
And this in Consumer report about 2019 TR7's: "Our lab tests show that the updated Speed Queen TR7 does clean better than its predecessor, stepping up from a Poor rating to a Fair rating for washing performance. The new Speed Queen TR7 left clearly visible stains on our test fabrics, says Richard Handel, who oversees CR’s laundry appliance tests. “It’s still not as good at cleaning as most agitator washers in our ratings. we conducted an extra test on the updated model using its heavy-duty cycle and max soil setting to gauge its best possible cleaning performance. “We found that cleaning improved from Fair to Good, while using significantly more water,” says Handel. “That’s what you would expect—a more aggressive wash cycle should improve cleaning.” Water usage went from 18 gallons to 30 gallons, a Good water-efficiency rating dropping to a Poor.
Despite the TR7’s unimpressive cleaning performance on the normal eco cycle, it is gentler on fabrics and quieter than many agitator washers in our tests. And even though it takes 20 minutes longer than the first TR7, it’s 60-minute wash time is still faster than a quarter of the agitator models in our ratings. "

The new 2020 TR7 has 7 years warranty where as TC5 has only 3.
TR7 is only $50 bucks more at my local dealer.
How batter are the new 2020 TR7's against 2018 ones? Any current owner shed some light?
I found this reddit post for 2019 TR7's.
I wont have heavy soil clothing, just regular office clothes and may be some katchup stains here and there.
My Citi card +2 years warranty applies to any appliances.
I asked the local Speed Queen dealer for warranty service calls, they informed it goes directly to the manufacturer, they don't service them.. is that a concern? They charge $80 for installation and haul away.
Is getting the 2020 TR7 a safe choice? or should I stick with 2019 TC5 with lesser warranty or even just go with LG 3900.
Thanks for reading.
Ok I know this subject has been beat to death but I need some clarity before I pull the trigger.
First, what’s up with the 2018 changes made to SQ? Apparently quality went down…the agitator no longer moves independently of the drum? Now it all moves together? Have they addressed these issues and resolved problems? I had a local salesman tell me all the negative reviews/articles after 2018 were 100% industry driven….basically other companies saw an opportunity to topple the king and made up a bunch of negative stuff.
Second, TC5 or TR7? Right now the TR7 is 100$ more after rebates and it has a 7 year warrantee vs 5 year with the TC5. Seems like a good deal but the electronics and “gentler” modes on the TR7 kinda make me wonder if my super dirty heavy clothes will actually get clean. On the other side there is concern the TC5 will be too hard on my wife/kids clothes.
Ok, that is all…thanks for reading and for any replies
I just bought a new Speed Queen TR7 and matching Speed Queen dryer. I've read that the Normal/Eco wash setting is not the one to use, so I'm looking for recommendations on which wash settings to use for normal loads?
Any help by TR7 owners is appreciated.
20+ year old Kenmore washer finally died and in the market for a new unit. Pretty much settled on a SQ although a little concerned with small tub size. Keep going back and forth over the TR7 and TC5. Would have purchased the TR7 immediately if not for the consumer reports rating of how effective it cleans. I understand there has been software updates since then, but even the follow up report isn’t glowing. Use is for a family of 4, with the most soiled is from two under two including a two week old. Weighing the effectiveness of the TR7 against harshness on clothes of the TC5 (true agitator). Is the TR7 that ineffective that it makes the TC5 the easy pick? Or is the consumer reports old news and the TR7 worth of the SQ name?
I am considering Speed Queen Washer TR7 to replace a broken washer. I learned about Speed Queen just last week that they are the best when I started shopping.
Turns out they have changed the cycle and now they have the classic models (TC) and the new perfect Wash (TR). I understand the new TR series is gentler on clothes and the old one is better for tough jobs (and could cause more wear and tear on clothes).
My question is, due to the new design ( TR7003WN in particularly), it is still the best choice against other competitors in terms of doing cleaning job?
I have broken washer and need to make a decision ASAP. Thank you,

Pick one. You are 6 feet into the weeds over issues that aren't real but imagined due to researching too hard. PICK. ONE. I have a 575 because 5 year warranty for less than SQ.
Isn't the TC5 the classic style of SQ that was brought back that everyone loved? I'd lean toward that even with the lesser warranty. Haven't heard much positive feedback on the TR models.
I have an LG, and although it's worked for about 7 years with one service call, it makes a strange grinding sound when washing (was repaired for that once). I wouldn't buy another one of those based on what I've read from other LG washer owners and would probably look at the SQ TC series or the Maytag 575 models as a potential replacement. Although I haven't read your links about the latest mechanical issues, the previous research I read and reviews I saw on YouTube and what people say in this subreddit, have me leaning that way.
I just bought a new Speed Queen TR7 and matching Speed Queen dryer. I've read that the Normal/Eco wash setting is not the one to use, so I'm looking for recommendations on which wash settings to use for normal loads?

Bought through AJ Madison, total $2858 for both without tax. Shipping was an additional $33.76 and the driver/company contracted for shipment was A+
Quick shipping, arrived 8 days after purchase.
I've washed everything up to multiple queen sized duvet covers at once. It states 'don't be afraid to load up the to the top' which I have on most loads and haven't seen any issues.
The dryer has yet to leave anything moist when selecting the dry setting vs. almost dry. This applied even to multiple queen duvet covers that got clumped together.
Love the special load options, soaking options, delayed start, and the general options for washing.
Reasonably quiet, very sturdy.
Washed a load of wool delicates without issue. Seems like the agitation can get fairly minimal, so I think the 'tough of clothes' thing won't be a concern to me, anyway.
I bought these models as I knew they'd be used often in our small hostel, but love the fact they have many settings to use for my personal wardrobe which is small but mostly BIFL items I value. So far I'm really happy with the decision.
Seems like a top load Speed Queen is everyone's favorite here, and I prefer to buy American so that works for me. My question is which model? My understanding is the less circuitry the better, so TR7 is out. That leaves TC5 TR5 and TR3. I think the main difference is the TR don't have an agitator while the TC is the classic version and does. I hear agitators wash well but wear out clothes, and I'm not too concerned with getting it "perfectly clean" so maybe I'll go for TR, but would love to hear what y'all think.
According to Speed Queen, this machine should last 25 years but mine lasted about 10 months with light loads, 3 times a week.
My wife hates it when washer is out of service. That’s why i went for Speed Queen. What a joke. Made in America? 😀😀😀
