Split King vs. King? : r/Mattress
July 25, 2023 - My partner and I upgraded from a Queen to a Cal King with an adjustable base. Turns out, we don't like the same mattress firmness or adjustments, so we're switching to a split Cal King.

r/turmerry on Reddit: King vs. Split King Mattress Size
June 13, 2023 - A king bed is an oversized bed, and the split king is another variant of the king-size mattress, but it is split in the center. People with large families, tall sleepers, and restless sleepers generally need a king-size bed.
People also ask

Is a split king bigger than a California king?
Yes, a split king is bigger than a California king because a standard king is bigger, if only by a small margin. A standard king offers 6080 square inches, while a California king offers 6048 square inches.

What is the point of a split king?
Separate twin XL mattresses accommodate differences in mattress firmness, elevation, or other sleep preferences. And a split king minimizes motion transfer.

March 5, 2025 -

Hi there! My husband and I are really struggling with sleep lately. Context: We’re 27 years old, married for 2 years. Currently have a queen hybrid mattress that has been great up until the last couple of months. All of a sudden I’ve started sleeping horribly and I’ve become really sensitive to my husband’s movements waking me up CONSTANTLY. I’m waking up anywhere between 7-15 times in one night and I’m exhausted. We’ve resorted to one of us sleeping on the couch most nights because we can’t take it anymore. It’s so sad because we miss each other and value sleeping in the same bed for the daily connection it provides in our relationship. We’re now seriously considering a mattress upgrade because we’re desperate.

My biggest concern is movement transfer, so I believe a foam mattress would be best. A split king sounds ideal since that would reduce movement transfer the most, but I’m worried about the crack in the middle of the 2 mattresses. We definitely use the center of our current mattress for cuddling and “other activities” regularly, and I’ve read some reviews about the crack being an issue. I’ve also seen people get things like a foam crack filler, a band that holds the 2 mattresses together, and retaining bars to keep them in place. We’re willing to get all those things if it helps. Ugh I feel like we’re too young and too newly married to get a split mattress lol 😭

My concern with a regular king size foam mattress is that it might not reduce motion transfer enough to improve sleep quality.

Other considerations: we’re mostly side sleepers but occasionally sleep on stomach and back. Both average weight. I prefer mattresses on the medium to firm side because I have back and hip issues.

What are your thoughts and recommendations? Would appreciate hearing from your experiences with a split king. Thank you!! 🫶🏻

Split King vs King Size Mattress: What Is the Difference?
Big for restricted spacesWhile a King bed offers a large sleeping space, it's not suitable for smaller rooms as it can feel too claustrophobic. Hard to move because of size & weightMoving a split is easier you're moving two separate Twin XL mattresses, but that’s not the case with a King.

r/Mattress on Reddit: Split King vs Full King adjustable frame on King Mattress
November 11, 2022 -

I'm purchasing an adjustable bedframe and the local shop has the exact same model for the exact same price only difference is there's the option to have the frame as a split king synced together or a single king frame. We already have a novaform king size 14" foam mattress we love and are going to keep with no immediate plans on going to a split king.

My question is: Is there any disadvantage to using a split king frame that is synced together over just a one piece king frame? Google is no help.

My thought is that by having a split king it would be a little more sturdy as I am a rather large guy. Also if we ever wanted to go to a split we had the option or if we wanted to move the beds into a guest room it could be two twin xls.

Thank you for reading.

My partner (5'10" 250lb+ combo back/side sleeper) and I (5'7" 125lb combo back/side sleeper) are looking to finally replace our old foam in-a-box mattress with a king size hybrid or innerspring. We're both suffering from shoulder/back/hip pain and it's reached the point where neither of us are getting a good nights rest. We've gone to a hassleless and laid down on quite a few there with the Beautyrest Beaumont Cay A and Dreamcloud Premier hybrid being our two top contenders (beautyrest for the best feel and do-able price, dreamcloud for a comparable feel and way better price). The sheer amount of research/reviews I've hemmed and hawed over the past couple months are definitely not helping! There seems to be major problems with every option and it's driving me up the wall.

We'd pull the trigger except for the murkiness of hassleless's return policy (restocking fee's etc). I've been eyeing Winkbed's firmer, the boring hybrid, and Sealy Posturepedic Pro Lincoln Heights (shoutout costco) for the better trial periods/return policies but it sucks we can't actually lay down on any of these before going through the trouble of purchasing/setting up in home.

We're both looking for a medium-firm feel with good edge support, relief from shoulder/back/hip pain, and if possible as much movement isolation as possible. Neither of us have problems sleeping hot/cold. Would prefer a mattress in the $2k or lower range. If anyone has any opinions or recommendations please chime in!

I work for Hamuq (Canadian mattress company), I also spend way too much time talking about mattresses so I’ll just give you my honest take. Your weight difference is the real challenge here. A lot of “medium-firm” beds feel great in a showroom but end up too soft for him and too firm at your shoulders after a few weeks. Quick thoughts on what you listed: Beautyrest feels nice in-store, but the plush top layers tend to break down faster under 250+ lbs. DreamCloud is decent value, but motion isolation and long-term support can be hit or miss for heavier sleepers. WinkBed Firmer supports him well, but lighter side sleepers often find shoulder pressure. Costco Sealy = amazing return policy, but consistency and edge support vary by model. What you actually want: Zoned support (firmer center, softer shoulder/hip zones) Strong coils + moderate comfort layers (not plush) Built-in pressure relief instead of relying on toppers That’s exactly the problem we try to solve at Hamuq, couples with big weight differences who both need pain relief without sacrificing edge support or motion isolation. Worth a look if you want something designed around that reality. Avoid anything “plush,” prioritize zoning and coil strength, and lean toward brands with real trial periods. You’re not crazy, this is one of the hardest mattress situations to get right. Hope this helps!

You both might benefit from an internal split king (one mattress but the top comfort layer is split inside). DLX hybrid is one (they also have a latex hybrid). Nest also makes a memory foam (Nest Sparrow) or a latex (Nest Owl). These are nice because the quilted top unzips and the comfort layer can be exchanged or replaced down the road and you can each dial in the exact comfort and support that you need. You can even put memory foam on one side and latex on the other. There are options which is great. I have a Nest Owl in medium in one room and it's very comfortable. I've tried all the Winkbeds in store and I feel like they are just meh. I don't like the materials they use. The luxury firm is pretty firm and you will almost definitely find it too firm as a lightweight side sleeper. I'm shorter and heavier than you and I thought it was like a brick with a quilted top. The soft version was much more comfortable but your partner will find it to be too soft. In another room, I have an Engineered Sleep Classic Hybrid Cushion Firm and a 3in medium talalay topper and it's very supportive with cushion for side sleeping. They also have the Sleep Duo (I think that's the name) where you get the base and choose the top comfort layer which can be replaced in the future without having to replace the whole mattress. They are a small business and have excellent customer service. They're so nice! They even invited me to come to the factory next time I'm in town and they would give me a tour. With that said, buying in store is almost more of a crap shoot than finding something online that would suit you. You can try them in store and still not like it when you actually sleep on it and you're stuck paying fees and you still have to use the credit to buy something from the same store where you may not have liked anything else. If you buy online, you get to try it and the majority of brands allow free returns, so there's little to no risk. There are also showrooms around that carry the most popular online brands to try out in person before you order them (check your area).

Wife and I got a King size Purple RestorePlus Hybrid that we love. However my wife is a back sleeper and prefers 'zero g' on the adjustable base, I'm a side/stomach sleeper and prefer flat.

She wants to trade in for a split king (our base is already split) but I'm hesitant. Our kids and dog often climb into bed and lay between us, and I'm worried about the crack between the two mattresses gobbling them up.

My wife thinks the crack isn't an issue and the bed would still feel like a single king. Anyone have input?

r/Mattress on Reddit: Talk me out of getting a Split King
June 16, 2020 -

Hi, all!! I had what I thought was a smart (but most likely lazy) idea and wanted to get your thoughts. I currently live on the 4th floor of an apartment building with my fiance. We just finished moving (again) and have decided it's time to replace my old full mattress.

We both have different sleeping preferences: I think memory foam is fine, she wants something much firmer. I sleep on my side/stomach, she sleeps on side/back. The plan was to get a queen mattress and call it a day, but then I saw Split Kings and thought (1) that's much easier to take up and down stairs (moving a full was difficult to maneuver) and (2) we can each get what we want.

Finally, we're renters and have a history of moving a lot (we may need to move overseas temporarily). I'm fine getting a nicer mattress, but would like one that isn't a pain to move and love the idea of 2 smaller mattresses. No interest in adjustable bed frames, just the mobility and customization of 2 smaller mattresses over 1.

However, I've seen a lot of complaints about the space between (cue Dave Matthews) and wanted to see if the forum could talk me out of doing something dumb before I do it.

If we don't get a split king we're leaning towards an Avocado Green Queen.

Me: 6' 165 lbs, side and stomach sleeper

Her: 5' 7" 115 lbs, side and back sleeper

I was looking at avocado green web site. Their adjustable states its for a split king, they dont sell split kings oddly, they say get two twins. Most of the retailers sell adjustable as split kings only a few beds on amazon say the work with kings but maybe I misunderstand.

Do adjustable bases work with regular kings?

What is a split king? Is it just code for two twins or is it a different animal?

Do spring based mattresses only work on adjustable as a split king but not a regular king?

What’s the deal with all these mattresses? 😎

Looking at getting a split king ghostbed with adjustable base. I really want the adjustability and zero gravity positions, and my husband really doesn't want to have to ride along. Husband is concerned that wholly separate mattresses aren't joined enough. We were looking at half-splits for a while, but the only companies that have something like that it's like a 10k package, plus I think I want to still use the leg raising functions independent of him. He's thinking that split king sets will have some way in which they're secured so its not as weird as just having 2 twins. I'm not so sure, I can't really see the difference in pictures. If we velcro'd them to secure them a little more, does that eliminate the ability to use raising and lowering separately?

r/Mattress on Reddit: King split mattress explanation needed
November 25, 2024 -

Can someone explain king split mattresses to me, I thought this was straight forward but I must be missing something.

What I think it is: So the basic idea seems that you have a king mattress where you can have each half be different. Firmness being the #1 thing. I've seen some examples where it's two completely different mattresses just next to each other.

I guess first question, is there a split king mattress that just looks like one mattress but internally are two different ones? One side firm the other soft.

My next question is when purchasing I never see an option to choose each side of the mattress. I would think there would be an option to configure both sides.

I feel like I'm completely missing something, and you know as a introvert millennial I decided to ask a bunch of random people in the internet rather than to walk into a mattress firm and talk to a sales rep.

Background: Me and my partner have been using a soft mattress for a while now, they love it but it's been such a pain for me. I really want to go back to a firm spring mattress or something close. We initial tough of a sleep number since that's their whole advertising each side chooses their firmness. Then I came across the concept of a split mattress and touch that would be a simpler solution to my problem.

Good Day All,

I'm begging for some guidance. For the last week I have been sleeping on the couch because our current bed has thrown my lower back / hips out (again).

My wife requires the softest known bed known to man kind to sleep on. I'd catch decent rack time on cinderblocks and a sleeping bag.

Dropping 10K on a SN i10 seems insane but its worth the pain for me.

If price isn't an obstacle is this the best option available? Personalcomfort just a knock off?

I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Thank s

Nick

I have a split king from SleepEZ. It’s latex, and each side is customized. If you haven’t felt a latex mattress, it’s different. You don’t sink in like you do with memory foam. It felt weird the first couple nights, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I have back issues and they feel better on this mattress, although obviously your experience may vary. One side is, from bottom to top, firm Dunlop, medium Dunlop, medium Talalay. It’s decently firm, but perhaps not as firm as you’d like. I might have gone even firmer but I talked to a SleepEZ rep and they said they don’t usually recommend going any firmer than that. However, since your preferred alternative is masonry, you certainly could. I’m less sure about the softer side. We got firm Dunlop, medium Dunlop, soft Talalay. It’s softer than then other side, but not soft enough for what your wife wants. I’m not sure how much to expect it to soften up, either. You can always call them and ask. I had a real person answer the phone right away every time I called. Also, I believe they allow you to exchange layers, although I haven’t had to. For what it’s worth, our split king is zipped up in a single cover, and you can’t feel any gap between the two sides. You can also get two twin XLs. We accidentally ordered that, and we had someone call us the next day to double-check that was correct. It wasn’t, and they refunded the price difference. Good luck! Back pain sucks, and finding the right mattress feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

My husband and I nearly went this route and then nearly went for a split Tempurpedic but compromised on the pro adapt medium hybrid. I would recommend looking into a it if you haven't. He wants a hard bed and I want a feather and this seems to work for both of us. It sleeps very cool to me if that matters to either of you...

Hey all,

I am looking to replace my aged King. I am thinking to get an adjustable base 2 twin xls and I like a more plush mattress but my wife likes a firm mattress. I am thinking of either silk and snow, hamuq or logan and cove. Most of these if I get different firmness levels the mattress height changes. Any thoughts on how to get different plush mattress and not have an inch or two of mattress height difference. Lol I am already a bit worried about the gap.
