Hi there! My husband and I are really struggling with sleep lately. Context: We’re 27 years old, married for 2 years. Currently have a queen hybrid mattress that has been great up until the last couple of months. All of a sudden I’ve started sleeping horribly and I’ve become really sensitive to my husband’s movements waking me up CONSTANTLY. I’m waking up anywhere between 7-15 times in one night and I’m exhausted. We’ve resorted to one of us sleeping on the couch most nights because we can’t take it anymore. It’s so sad because we miss each other and value sleeping in the same bed for the daily connection it provides in our relationship. We’re now seriously considering a mattress upgrade because we’re desperate.
My biggest concern is movement transfer, so I believe a foam mattress would be best. A split king sounds ideal since that would reduce movement transfer the most, but I’m worried about the crack in the middle of the 2 mattresses. We definitely use the center of our current mattress for cuddling and “other activities” regularly, and I’ve read some reviews about the crack being an issue. I’ve also seen people get things like a foam crack filler, a band that holds the 2 mattresses together, and retaining bars to keep them in place. We’re willing to get all those things if it helps. Ugh I feel like we’re too young and too newly married to get a split mattress lol 😭
My concern with a regular king size foam mattress is that it might not reduce motion transfer enough to improve sleep quality.
Other considerations: we’re mostly side sleepers but occasionally sleep on stomach and back. Both average weight. I prefer mattresses on the medium to firm side because I have back and hip issues.
What are your thoughts and recommendations? Would appreciate hearing from your experiences with a split king. Thank you!! 🫶🏻

My husband and I would like to upgrade to a king with an adjustable base. I was thinking of doing a split king so either of us can incline without bothering the other person.
Anyone have a split king? Love it/hate it? Do you do two separate twin fitted sheets and one king top sheet? (I’m a firm top sheet user, don’t come at me lol)
My husband and I have a split king sleep number I8. I use 2 twin xl fitted sheets and one king flat sheet. I buy it as a set on Amazon We are on an adjustable base however my husband has always kept his flat. I spend a lot of time reading in bed so I do move mine quite a bit and it does not bother my husband's side of the bed. He tosses and turns and I do not feel the movement on my side. If I had the chance to purchase this configuration again, I would.
I love my adjustable base and I’d definitely recommend a split king. You really don’t know how much your partner will want to use it, or if he will enjoy whatever position you’re using and vice versa. You don’t want to be subject to sitting up in the middle of the night and that sort of thing.
Hubby and I are looking at making this our next mattress. We currently have a regular king size but it needs replacing(crappy S mattress). We constantly rotate it to even out the “ridge” and I am wondering if 2twin XL mattresses would be better?
Anyone have any experience with one?
Do you love it, do you hate it? What are some things that surprise you about it? what do you wish you would’ve known before you got it?
Good Day All,
I'm begging for some guidance. For the last week I have been sleeping on the couch because our current bed has thrown my lower back / hips out (again).
My wife requires the softest known bed known to man kind to sleep on. I'd catch decent rack time on cinderblocks and a sleeping bag.
Dropping 10K on a SN i10 seems insane but its worth the pain for me.
If price isn't an obstacle is this the best option available? Personalcomfort just a knock off?
I'm willing to try anything at this point.
Thank s
Nick
I was looking at avocado green web site. Their adjustable states its for a split king, they dont sell split kings oddly, they say get two twins. Most of the retailers sell adjustable as split kings only a few beds on amazon say the work with kings but maybe I misunderstand.
Do adjustable bases work with regular kings?
What is a split king? Is it just code for two twins or is it a different animal?
Do spring based mattresses only work on adjustable as a split king but not a regular king?
What’s the deal with all these mattresses? 😎
Hi, all!! I had what I thought was a smart (but most likely lazy) idea and wanted to get your thoughts. I currently live on the 4th floor of an apartment building with my fiance. We just finished moving (again) and have decided it's time to replace my old full mattress.
We both have different sleeping preferences: I think memory foam is fine, she wants something much firmer. I sleep on my side/stomach, she sleeps on side/back. The plan was to get a queen mattress and call it a day, but then I saw Split Kings and thought (1) that's much easier to take up and down stairs (moving a full was difficult to maneuver) and (2) we can each get what we want.
Finally, we're renters and have a history of moving a lot (we may need to move overseas temporarily). I'm fine getting a nicer mattress, but would like one that isn't a pain to move and love the idea of 2 smaller mattresses. No interest in adjustable bed frames, just the mobility and customization of 2 smaller mattresses over 1.
However, I've seen a lot of complaints about the space between (cue Dave Matthews) and wanted to see if the forum could talk me out of doing something dumb before I do it.
If we don't get a split king we're leaning towards an Avocado Green Queen.
Me: 6' 165 lbs, side and stomach sleeper
Her: 5' 7" 115 lbs, side and back sleeper
You should absolutely get a split king. Ours is perfect. I got a strap from Amazon and it holds them together perfectly. All couples should have a split king and get exactly what they want! And so much easier to move. You'd be a fool to do anything else.
Sounds like a great plan to me, not dumb at all!
I'm shopping for an all latex bed and considering the adjustable base, but unsure what to get.
I'm planning on two twin mattresses with a foam bridge and a wool topper so we can customize our sides of the beds, plus it seems like it would be easier to flip/move if needed.
With that said, do you recommend the split base, or the regular king? Pros/cons of each?
Thanks in advance!
I’d get the split just so you guys can individually adjust. The big con would be that you have to buy 2 mattress and 2 bases and More wires to connect. If that’s not an issue the go for that. Me and my gf have a queen adjustable base i got free from work and she likes the head to be raised way higher than me as well as the feet so one of us is always compromising.
King or Split King is a personal preference based on how you each prefer to sleep and whether a foam bridge would bother you or not. Also, Latex can be quite heavy so you may find it much easier to move 2 smaller mattresses versus one King. I noticed you said you were ordering 2 Twin mattresses, make sure you actually order 2 Twin XL mattresses if you want them to properly fit a King base.
I'm purchasing an adjustable bedframe and the local shop has the exact same model for the exact same price only difference is there's the option to have the frame as a split king synced together or a single king frame. We already have a novaform king size 14" foam mattress we love and are going to keep with no immediate plans on going to a split king.
My question is: Is there any disadvantage to using a split king frame that is synced together over just a one piece king frame? Google is no help.
My thought is that by having a split king it would be a little more sturdy as I am a rather large guy. Also if we ever wanted to go to a split we had the option or if we wanted to move the beds into a guest room it could be two twin xls.
Thank you for reading.
Looking at getting a split king ghostbed with adjustable base. I really want the adjustability and zero gravity positions, and my husband really doesn't want to have to ride along. Husband is concerned that wholly separate mattresses aren't joined enough. We were looking at half-splits for a while, but the only companies that have something like that it's like a 10k package, plus I think I want to still use the leg raising functions independent of him. He's thinking that split king sets will have some way in which they're secured so its not as weird as just having 2 twins. I'm not so sure, I can't really see the difference in pictures. If we velcro'd them to secure them a little more, does that eliminate the ability to use raising and lowering separately?
We’re trying to decide between a split king vs a flex top adjustable mattress.
I think I understand the pros and cons, but wondering about actual experiences.
In my mind pros of a full split: -fully independent adjustability -no need to buy the special flex fitted sheets
Cons of a full split: -the gap, the gap, the gap -making the bed is harder
I was surprised how far apart the mattresses actually were in the showroom. It seems like there have to be ways to better bind them together in the middle without changing the functionality of the bed.
For us, the gap isn’t an issue for intimacy or bed making, which seem to be the two biggest complaints. But I wonder about feeling the edge more than you expect, if that makes sense.
I like the idea of fully independent adjustability, as I’ve had pretty severe lumbar back issues and being able to sleep with knees raised a bit seems like it could be helpful. That said, I have no idea if I would actually use it in practice.
I’m also somewhat picky about sheets. Adding in trying to find flex sheets in the style and color I like seems like a total pita.
Any input would be very appreciated. Any pros/cons I haven’t thought of? If you’ve tried a split and hated it, are there bridge options which made it better? Do people use the foot adjustability?
Hey everyone!
My fiancee and I are very different sleepers. She's 5ft about 115 pounds, sleeps on her back, and is a pretty heavy sleeper. I'm a male, 5'10", 160 pounds, side and back sleeper, with insomnia and wakes up very easily.
She likes firm and I like plush. We've had issues compromising on a mattress because we could only fit a queen. Now that we're moving into a bigger place, we are thinking of putting 2 twin XL mattresses into a king frame so we can get the mattress we each want.
Any suggestions or things to be careful for? I think we are each budgeting about $1200 each for twin XLs. Probably buy a bed bridge for the gap. How would we deal with different mattress heights?
Thanks!
My wife and I have a split king, with split adjustable bases. My mattress is about an inch thicker than hers. We evened it out by putting anti-vibration pads under her base. The pads are a dense rubber and don’t squish down like floor protector pads do.
We have a similar situation (different type sleepers, very different heights/weights).
We just got our split king set up last night, in fact (with help from this list!). We ended up with two twin XL mattresses from Nest (a medium and a firm) on an IKEA Espevar king bed frame that is actually in two pieces, which we figured would have less/no motion transfer. So far, so good--we slept on them last night, and I couldn't feel him flopping around at all. The mattresses are the same height, but we'll probably also get a bed bridge (now that I know they exist, thanks to this post), because there's a decent-sized gap between the mattresses. Good luck!
Anyone here actually have a split king mattress? If so I am looking to hear about your experience with them? Was the space/gap in between the mattresses ever an issue or annoying? Do you wish you would have a full sized king?
We are worried that maybe it won’t be so enjoyable as it sounds, considering the gap in the middle. And also we feel like it might make it hard for our children and dog to sleep with us from time to time or lay down in the same bed as us and watch movies.
We are also interested in getting the split king bases as well. Right now we are looking into both the Tempurpedic and Sleep Number models.
Any feedback would be great. We don’t want to make any mistakes the first time around, considering the price tag!!!
I'm in the market for a new mattress and adjustable base and found an interesting deal on a split King + adjustable base combo at Sam's Club (LulaaBED Split King). I'm strongly considering the deal because:
The mattress has pretty good reviews
Sam's has a pretty lengthy and easy return policy from what I've read
Comes with an adjustable base with head and foot adjustment, wireless remote, and massager
Much cheaper than what I've been able to find local for a king (split or regular) and adjustable base with comparable features
So with that said, I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback to share on how sleeping with a split King works. I'm planning on buying a bed bridge to help lessen the feel of the gap between the two mattresses. Is this enough? Does cuddling feel weird? How does sex work? Do I need to buy two twin-xl sheets or can I buy regular King sheets? Would it just be better to buy a regular king?
Just wondering if anyone has input to provide.
Wife and I got a King size Purple RestorePlus Hybrid that we love. However my wife is a back sleeper and prefers 'zero g' on the adjustable base, I'm a side/stomach sleeper and prefer flat.
She wants to trade in for a split king (our base is already split) but I'm hesitant. Our kids and dog often climb into bed and lay between us, and I'm worried about the crack between the two mattresses gobbling them up.
My wife thinks the crack isn't an issue and the bed would still feel like a single king. Anyone have input?
I’m purchasing the Tempur Luxe Breeze Firm, in King Size (not split). What are the pros and cons of purchasing the Ergo Base in King versus Split King? They show as different prices, and in the print materials, show as “Horizontal (King)”, versus “Vertical (split King)”.
My primary concerns are eliminating motion transfer, bed stability (lack of wobble), and long term mattress reliability.
I am thinking about getting a split king mostly because my home is old and has tight hallways, stairways and doorways.
I've seen estimates of 3 inch king size latex weighing about 60 pounds, does this sound right? If that's the case, and considering it's flexible (it is, right?), a split king wont really be necessary.
I'd rather not have the possiblity of feeling the seam. If I have to get a split king to be able to haul the peices around, I would like to have at least the comfort layer be one full piece.
Does anyone have experience getting a king size latex into an older small home?
Yes. It can be a challenge. It helps to have a forearm forklift. Also many modern mattresses can be folded like a taco. If you get a bed in a box, you can haul it in and have it expand in place. It also helps to protect it with plastic or a mattress bag.
look at naturepedic eos classic. comes in individual components and assembled in place. outer encasement (1pc), support coils (L+R are each separate), and comfort layer (latex or microcoil (also L+R pieces are separate). besides solving your problem of old home maneuverability, it also offers lots of customization options and L+R can be configured separately. brilliant system IMO.
