Three things: In addition to the "split king" set-up with two separate twinXL mattresses, a number of companies offer mattresses with split-firmness within the mattress -- so it would be one mattress with two sides. For an example of this in latex, check out SleepEZ or for a polyfoam/coil hybrid, check out the Nest Alexander Signature Hybrid . If you do go for the "split king" route with two Twin XL beds of different heights, you can even out the heights buying a block of TwinXL firm polyfoam in whatever the height difference is. Stick that block under the shorter mattress. You can buy a zippered mattress cover that enables you to DIY two TwinXL mattresses inside the same cover -- essentially DIYing your own split firmness mattress. You would need to make them the same height, but this could be accomplished with the same trick as listed in point 2. One advantage to this approach is you can also put one king sized unified layer (like 1" thick) that would make the actual top surface of the mattress feel more or less the same. More on reddit.com

We are looking to get a split king adjustable bed. My fiance moves a lot in his sleep and sometimes snores and I’m a light sleeper, and I cannot do memory foam it’s way too firm for me so we want the split king. I’ve looked up countless brands, every brand seems pretty good and then I see threads saying it’s the worst mattress/company of all time. I’m going insane trying to decide on one.
Sleep number is the only one that I can’t generally find terrible reviews for - most people seem to like those beds for a long time or so it seems. Main downside being how pricey it is. Anyone have thoughts on sleep number split king or any other brand recommendations?

Sleep number is an air mattress with some foam on top. You are giving up a lot of support and I believe comfort, to gain the adjustability. I wouldn’t care too much about the automatic snore control either. It would be pretty unnerving for your or your partner’s bed to start moving without notice. You certainly can find a soft twinXL mattress for your side without the unnecessary and frankly undesirable technology. If you have a local non-chain mattress store or a factory showroom you and your partner should be able to check out appropriate options. Any mattress whether innerspring, latex, memory or hybrid that is comfortable for you should work. You should be careful to reasonably match the heights of your individual mattresses.
