September 17, 2025 - I'd argue the newfound ability to play any song you want with Spotify Free is a bigger deal than getting lossless audio with Premium. This helps close the gap between the two tiers in terms of the control you have over your music. Before, the free version of Spotify felt more like Pandora where you could listen to only a song based on an artist or song instead of the song itself.

In most countries where the Basic Individual plan is available, the only difference between it and the Premium Individual plan is that with Basic Individual, you don’t get the 15 hours of audiobooks access that you would have with Premium Individual (although you can still purchase audiobooks via one-time payments separately with Basic Individual).

September 26, 2024 - The answer, as always is more complicated than just “Well if you’ve got $11.99 going spare every month, then you should get Premium!”, with more nuance to the two streaming options. After all, $11.99 is a lot of money to watch clear out of your bank account when Spotify comes a-knocking for its monthly tithe — so let’s work out whether you should stick to Spotify Free, or cough up for its feature-rich Premium option.
