r/Frugal on Reddit: Spotify Family Plan
April 8, 2023 -

Recently saw someone asking how to pretend your a student to get Spotify student pricing. We’ll just wanted to say the family plan is $15.99 and you can split it with 6 people and it comes out cheaper than the student pricing without faking a student email/ID. You can all keep your same accounts too, you just activate it and add five friends. I just had them all pay me the $32 up front for the whole year so I wasn’t tracking them down for $2.60 payment each month.

r/spotify on Reddit: Spotify Hikes Prices of Premium Plans Again as Streaming Inflation Continues
June 3, 2024 -

The cost of the individual plan rises by $1 per month, with the duo plan rising by $2 and the family plan by $3.

Spotify is hiking the prices of its premium plans for the second time in a year, a sign that streaming inflation is still running hot.

The music streaming giant said on Monday that it is adjusting the prices for all of its premium plans, with the individual plan rising by $1 per month to $11.99, the duo plan rising by $2 per month to $16.99, the family plan rising by $3 per month to $19.99. The student plan, which is offered at a discount to verified students, remains at $5.99.

The prices go into effect immediately for new subscribers, with existing subscribers getting an email explaining the new prices over the next month, after which the new prices will be in effect.

for context, we are a family of 4, 2 daughters, me and my wife. we share a premium individual account across 4 devices, then i bought my daughters a tablet and they installed spotify. and now one of us gets logged out from time to time, is it true only 5 devices per account? then i saw the family plan, with 6 accounts all tied in, does that mean we can log in 5 devices per account? and also can we import and export playlist? since my account holds all our playlist.

March 11, 2024 -

I woke up to this email. Spotify is increasing the price for family plan again?? They’ve just added useless features that I bet less than 5% of users use (such as the DJ) and increased the price for everyone. Prices are in Australian dollars

Just got the email below:

“Thank you for being a valued Premium subscriber. Starting on your billing date in September, your subscription price will change from A$23.99/month to A$27.99/month.

We’re increasing the price of Premium Family so that we can continue to innovate on our product offerings and features, and bring you the best experience.”

Not a massive shock but a 16.7% increase is on the nose. Is there any reason at all not to transition to Apple Music?

Individual vs family

Besides sharing an account with the family is there a difference? In Premium Individual I was able to listen and download some books but now I just got Premium Family and it’s got this message:

You can't buy audiobooks in the app, but titles you've already purchased through Spotify can be listened to here.

In individual the lock icons weren’t on any of these chapters - what am I doing wrong?

Edit 2: thank you everyone. I've now understood that Spotify premium IS worth the money. Thanks for all the info 🙏🏻

May 22, 2024 - Also not sure whether we are on duo or family but we get 15 hours free audio books on ours as well so saves an audible subscription if you’re into audiobooks ... If you buy the $99 1 year gift card then Spotify premium works out to be $8.25 a month.

They're at it again. Starting on July, Spotify Premium will be $11.99, family plans will be $19.99, and duo will be $16.99 in the US. The fact that this comes just days after their CEO (Daniel Ek) belittled artists by saying the "cost of creating content is close to zero" irks me. Plus their service has honestly gone worse. They used to be great at music discovery but they're now recommending the same songs from the same artists over and over again. Their UI is now too cluttered because they want to do too much. And their artist royalty payments are still one of the lowest. Unsubscribing now...

They claim they couldn’t confirm we live together… we’ve been living together for 8 years. They won’t let me rejoin for 12 months and are forcing me to get my own premium plan even though he’s now paying extra for the family plan that only he can use. I know Spotify is having financial woes but this seems shady as heck.
