r/DIY on Reddit: what is the best type of paint for spray painting wooden furniture?
December 12, 2014 - Once you have bare wood or little finish (or well primed), you can use basically whatever paint you find. I've used both spraypaint (a can was enough for a dresser) or a pint of regular old house paint tinted in my favorite color.

Need some help! Never spray painted furniture before
Lots of questions... First, you should paint something else before starting on your chair. Get a feel for how the spray works and feels. Less is more. In almost all painting situations, multiple thin coats is always going to be the win. This is where most people (myself included) fail. Everyone wants to get coverage.. but that's not the way to go. If you hold the can/nozzle too close you'll saturate. If you hold it too far away the paint will beging to dry in the air before it gets to the substrate and you'll get a texture. If you paint over a layer that hasn't had time to gas-out, you'll trap the solvent between layers and end up with what folks call 'orange peel'. It's a texture, not a color. The purpose of your primer is to promote adhesion. One to two thin coats. How long you need to wait depends on the type of paint, the temperature, relative humidity and exposure to light. If it's a dry day and kinda warm it will be a short wait, an hour or less. If it's cold and humid it might take hours to overnight. Spray something small at the same time as your piece - that you can touch to check to see how tacky-dry it is. Follow the instructions on the can of paint for cure time. Dry to the touch and cured are not the same thing. Sanding between coats should only be done lightly to remove detritus/dust. The highest grit that will do the job. Sand where necessary and don't where it's not. Two coats of primer and two to three coats of color should do a chair. Unless you live in a swamp - I would expect this to take a day, maybe the last coat the second day. More on reddit.com

what is the best type of paint for spray painting wooden furniture?
I can't stress enough the importance of good paint for an irreplaceable project! It's a tiny bit more, but 110% worth it, get Rustoleum's 2x coverage. The difference in speed and quality is AMAZING, and worth every penny. If you're planning on sanding it or scuffing it anyway, ignore this part, but I've found that using Zinsser primer makes life so much easier, and it adheres to EVERY. THING. Even metal. It's literally the best, if you're spray painting furniture, don't even bother with anything else. As far as quantity, always buy at least one more than you think you'll need, because (especially with spindles) if you do it correctly there will be a lot of overspray, in order to avoid drips, lines, or runs. It's worth it to just do it right the first time!! If you primer it first, you're going to need at least one extra can of your color if you want to match it as closely to the lid color as possible, because primer soaks up the paint so much. The key to a great spray painting job is layers- be patient, and do one layer at a time. Also, temperature- too hot and it gets chalky when it dries, too cold and it'll be forever tacky to the touch :/ I'm not a pro, this is just my advice from almost 10 years experience redoing furniture as a hobby :) Good luck!! r/Spraypaint on Reddit: Need some help! Never spray painted furniture before
September 19, 2023 -

Hello!

Refinishing a wooden high chair... So far, I've taken it apart, done a few repairs, and sanded it with 80, 120, and 220 grit.

I'm going to be spray painting it grey, so I've purchased a spray primer, a grey spray paint, and a clear spray poly.

I've got a few questions:

For the Primer: How many layers of primer do I need? How long do I need to wait before I can spray another layer (if i need more than one)? Do I need to sand between layers? Do I need to sand after the last layer/before the 1st paint layer? What grit?

For the paint: How many layers should I do? How long do I need to wait between layers? Sand between layers? Sand after final layer/before poly? What grit?

Same questions for the spray poly...

I'm trying to figure out the general process and how much priming/painting I can expect to get done in a day!

Thanks so much!
