Does anyone know of a place where I can get a square fire pit drop in burner for I don't know less than a hundred bucks? If not then I'm going to just build my own.

Reason it's expensive, its made of 304 stainless steel. It will last outside and you won't have to replace every year or two. It wont get clogged and it is made to look like a firepit. I sold these at my last company and it really is the way to go if you want it to last but there are much better options that still keep cost down and simplify everything. If it was my project, I would used a stainless steel outdoor fire ring, connect with a dante key valve for shut off with flex lines to connect them. Add a spark igniter made for a grill that is battery powered. And build a base from stone brick and cover. the holes in the burner need to face down! Otherwise they will clog or get filled with water. Also keep in mind the gas type as you want a yellow flame and not blue. Turkey Fryers are made for heat and not looks they mix the air differently. Price should be: SS Firering $70-$90 depending on size, Dante Valve $25ish, Igniter Kit $25ish This way you do it right once and it will last.

Could you just cannibalize a $40 turkey fryer burner? I mean it won't be anywhere near 300k btu obviously...

I cant seam to find information if this is viable or not. We picked up the bricks we liked, pea gravel, etc, and on the way out the Home Hardware the clerk asked what we were making and we told her a firepit. She said we should build it on a patio stone 24x24 , dig the ground up so the stone is level with the ground once placed and then build up the bricks of the firepit on that. That would mean our firepit would fit perfectly on it and not be directly on the ground. Is this even viable or safe? I feel like it would be fine but probably not drain the rain very well.

It's fine. When you build the brick ring on top of the 24x24 stone, leave gaps for the first two layers so that water can drain out. Dig hole, 6-8 inches deep, 32 x 32 . Layer of pea gravel, 24x24 patio stone on top. Build your pit, with gaps in the first two layers. Fill pit with 2-4 inches of pea gravel. You don't want to build directly on ground because it will settle and put your pit out of alignment. Also, depending on the area of the country you live in, you don't want root systems underneath catching fire and spreading underground.
