What is your experience or take on the Square Reader?
It's not a bad option for small businesses and mobile vendors, but please be careful as to how it's presented when charging people. If it's not clear that you are the owner or someone authorized it can be a little unsettling to see someone pull their phone out of their pocket and start swiping away with your card. If multiple people are authorized to initiate charges I would get a cheap tablet dedicated as a POS and tablet mount instead of passing a phone around, as it looks a lot more professional, IMO. r/smallbusiness on Reddit: Whats the point of getting the $50 square reader vs the tiny ones you plug into your phone?
December 25, 2024 -
Is it just so that you don't have customers touching your phone?? I'm not sure what other point there' be to it. Im pretty sure the tiny one has the same functions as the $50 one, its just less convenient i guess?? Please let me know if theres any other reason or if i'm wrong :)
Edit: For context, im doing my first artist alley and already spent a lot. I wasn't sure whether it'd be worth it to buy one when my mom already has the free tiny reader. She has been insisting that I don't need it, and since i've been using her money mostly for this I'd have to convince her to let me invest more on a $50 one.

Many CCs don’t accept swipe as the first form of payment contact. Swipe is not secure and you (the merchant) are not insured against swipe transactions if they are fraudulent. That means your phone with the free reader needs to accept dip (chip) or tap (nfc). The free reader doesn’t take dip so that means it needs tap. Does the app allow tap? What if tap doesn’t work?
