Hello, I just bought this secondhand Squier from one of my friends and the serial seems odd. The serial number is CYKK20007319. I checked it and figured out that CY means that it was manifactured in China, Yako, but the "KK" isn't mentioned anywhere.

Help with a VN serial Strat | Squier-Talk Forum
July 11, 2012 - A guy on my local CL has a Sunburst Strat that looks like it's in decent shape from the pics. Serial number VN588088. Does anyone know if this is solid wood or plywood? I know it doesn't have Fender stamped saddles, and from the pics it looks like a black logo on the headstock.

The Squiers had the narrow spacing quite rarely the Fenders slightly more often. There did not appear to be any co-ordination with the serial numbers except they seemed to be middle range numbers that had the narrow spacing and what appeared to be later and earlier serial numbers with the wide.

The serial number of the guitars manufactured in the Samick factory had the S9 or S1 prefix and was also printed in black ink. The tuning machines of the first Korean Squiers Stratocasters made in Young Chang were the Fender/Gotoh Standard type, like those used in Japan, while guitars built in Samick or Sung Eum were usually fitted with unbranded Standard tuners or with the cheaper Jin Ho covered tuning machines.

There's this Squier I'm thinking of picking up. According to my research, it has a serial number of VN3 which means it was made in Korea at Sunghan plant in 1993. The Fender logo is silver with black lining, and where the words "Original Contour Body" should be it says "Squier Series". Apparently, they have plywood bodies, but great necks. What's your experience, are they any good? Is it worth picking up and modding a bit?

I got a plywood Korean Squier in the late 80s and the neck was incredible. I gigged with that thing, recorded with it, etc and 15 years after I bought it for $150 I sold it for $150.

I owned a Korean "Fender Stratocaster, Squier Series" (when it would usually say "Original Contour Body"). The tuning-machines were low-grade, but I don't remember the body being laminate. The neck seemed fine--I got the guitar for $60, so I didn't have anything to complain about. I would not pay over $100 for one. There's a lot of lore about the "Stratocaster, Squier Series" guitars, which were made both in Korea and in Mexico. I've included some links to old forum pages where Mr. Keith Brawley---Fender's guy in Asia, at the time---comments on various Squier guitars, including the "Stratocaster, Squier Series". Note that in regards to the second link, the discussion goes on for several pages: http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=1999&topic_number=10413 http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=2000&topic_number=13885
