Hi, can you please check my work? I think I'm on the right path, but I would prefer somebody's take on my calculations. The exercise I'm working on is #5 and my assignment provided a formula, but I found another formula online. Also, the unknown substance is supposed to be Ethanol (C2H5OH)
Thank you!
Given Formula Measurements My work (Standard Deviation) Top answer 1 of 2

The work you’re showing here looks right. The formula you’re using is to determine a sample standard deviation. The other formula for standard deviation that you found is most likely for determining population standard deviation; the formula you are using should be appropriate for this problem. One comment: you are rounding off your intermediate values for your calculation pretty short. It might be helpful in the future to include more digits on those values to avoid error in your final answer. Probably won’t matter much here though.

Thank you for your helpful response. Regarding the rounding of values, I also thought it was quite short, but I rounded based off significant figures. My instructor will probably grade it based on the work and concepts, so it probably won't be a big deal like you mentioned. Once again, thank you!

September 26, 2020 - However, we will always use technology to perform the actual computation of the standard deviation. The symbols in the expression are defined as follows: n is the number of values in the data set (the count). Recall that ∑ means to add up (compute the sum). ... The individual values are denoted by x. ... Before we learn to use technology to compute the standard deviation, we practice estimating it.

Use the worksheet from exercise 1 to also calculate the variance and standard deviation of the sodium values by setting up a formula. You will need to create a column to calculate individual values of before calculating s2 and s. Compare your standard deviation and variance with those calculated using the built-in STDEV and VAR functions.
