closer to a big city with lots to do I am from Southern California. Los Angeles is a geographically massive city with a lot of traffic, and there's no good public transportation from Westwood. There's that meme about "Los Angeles is an hour from Los Angeles." Right now a few minutes before 4 PM, Google Maps tells me it's a 30-minute drive from UCLA to West Hollywood, 45-minute drive from UCLA to LA Live, and slightly more than an hour from UCLA to the Rose Bowl (UCLA's home football stadium). I got into Stanford but am considering other options, primarily UCLA. One reason I like UCLA is I feel like they have a better campus life— more involved in sports, closer to a big city with lots to do, active music scenes etc. I haven’t heard much about Stanford, but everywhere I’ve read says it’s more academically focused and serious. Any thoughts?

"I haven’t heard much about Stanford" Incredible that you got it. Undergrad life centers around the campus. LA is not NYC and UCLA is not NYU or Fordham Lincoln Center where the city is at your doorstep. What "involvement in sports" do you seek?

I’ll be attending a grad program at Stanford in the Fall and I’m currently working on reducing my estimated living costs. My family and I (husband, kid and small dog) currently pay $4k for a 3bd2ba house with yard space in North San Jose. The size of this home is perfect and l want to stay while in school but lately I’ve been wondering if I can get the same size place for less closer to campus.
Anyone have a good sense of how far $4k gets you in rent near Palo Alto?
Update: We’re staying put! I’m new to the area and didn’t realize how lucky we are to have our place. Thanks for the realistic points of view! The sentiment was super helpful in gut checking what might be possible.
