Realistically, Canva is a bit crap for creating business cards. As an employee there was always an internal cringe when someone brought in a design from that site. As you've found out the program leaves out any mention of bleed, which is the extra part of the paper that is cut off to ensure you get color all the way to the edge of the card. For our system you need a half inch extra space all the way around the boarder to not only account for the bleed itself, but to make sure that your text and images are not close to the edge. The machines we use always have a little bit of variation in each cut, so if your to close, some of your cards may be ok, some may not. Measurements wise, you want all your important parts of the card, your info/images to be contained in an area 1.75 x 3.25. inches. However, the actual size of the image itself should be 2.25 x 3.75. If your familiar at all with photoshop, this would be the difference between your 'image' and your 'canvas' Don't use a screenshot, your quality is going to go down, and make sure you upload the file as either a jpg or pdf, png files tend to raster like crazy, again, leaving you with a low quality image. Paper wise, upgrade to the premium matte called cougar. Its a thicker card and has a actual matte finish, meaning that people will be able to write on it if needed, the other papers have a coating on them and most pens will smear. r/Staples on Reddit: How to ensure a successful business card order?

Hi guys, I'm thinking about printing business cards at Staples, I have never done it at Staples before and just wanna hear for those of you who have experience: if there is anything I need to know before I go in? Is it possible that I go to Staples to look at the card samples before I place order online for same day pick up? What else to look out for? Thanks!

We can show you samples of what we can do in store. Either 12pt. gloss, 12pt. matte, or 110lb. Cougar. If you already have a card designed save it as a PDF or JPEG on a flash drive and bring it to the store so we can download it.

Things you’ll need: the file of your business card. preferably PDF or JPEG formats on a flash drive— having it on your phone or laptop is fine but it extends the process time because you’ll have to email it and that can be finicky. if you don’t have a already-made file of your card, I would reccomend looking through the templates of cards on the print and marketing website PRIOR to coming in and trying to make an order online yourself, which is VERY easy. The website literally walks you through the process. Yes, you can look at paper samples, in fact there should be a booklet you can look through if your store still has it (my store had to throw ours out because a woman spilled coffee on it). Same day pickup is supposed to be guaranteed as long as you place the order before 2PM… but honestly, lately corporate has been giving stores less and less hours to work with and more and more work on top of the associates who are clocked in. I would honestly try not to expect same day pickup as a guarantee, but more as a nice surprise. We WANT to do your order as fast as possible, but for some stores it’s just not feasible. Please be nice and patient with the associate working with you, I would bet money on it that they will be having a rough day/week/month working at staples.

I want to print out standard business cards with same day pickup. So I know i’m limited to just the front of a card. But when I go to upload the image (PDF), it looks blurry/grainy in the preview, where I have to confirm it looks okay. But in the editing part it looks clearer and cleaner. Will it print the way it looks in the preview?? Or will it print out more clearly?

Also what’s the policy on them? Like if they don’t turn out the way I’d like them too can I return them? Or do i have to deal with it?

r/Staples on Reddit: Any tips for printing Canva business cards?
August 21, 2024 -

Hey all,

Totally new to this printing stuff, making some business cards and wanted to see if you all have any tips so that they come out in good quality.

I had one concern with the printing platform before because when I created the card on Canva everything was within the bleed lines, but then the next page when I clicked publish came up with a "danger zone" and wanted me to move things inside more. I went into the store and she wasn't too sure what I meant but said if it's within the bleed it's fine. Not sure if this is true?

Is it better to create it and screenshot it as an image and take it in?

Is there any paper you'd recommend that turns out best?

Appreciate any thoughts!

Thanks

After creating the file go to Staples.com/printandmarketingservices That's where we make all our business cards, once you choose how you want it it will take you to a builder, upload your file and place it in there. Once there you can see any issues with your card and readjust the file from there. Also, keep the file. Most of the time our system will delete the file after it's used so if you want more business cards keep it.

Here’s what I made to package them instead of just a white strip of paper and I’m definitely not giving them to customers in the 5x7 envelopes lolol. Let me know if anyone wants the files for them and I’ll drop it in the comments. I made the strip 2”x6.5” and used the 1.5 circle labels for the easy button sticker.

Increasingly, I have customers submitting orders on design.staples.com, and printing the cards is a nightmare. If you examine the artwork on ATC, you will notice numerous inconsistencies within the file.

The pixel dimensions should be 1125 x 675, which is equivalent to 3.75 inches by 2.25 inches. This size should be centered within the entire rectangle when uploading the artwork.

Even if the file is correct, getting it to print correctly is often still a matter of trial and error. There has to be a better explanation for this problem.

Why can't you submit the correct dimensions and get a template of cards based on exact dimensions, rather than an approximate one? Also, who can direct me to an image shift guideline manual? I am finding that the image shift not working or not working as I perceive it to work,

Staples business cards “safe area”
May 31, 2023 - Any background colors should be extend to or beyond the solid blue lines to ensure that your cards will be full-bleed. ... Everything outside of the safe area is AT RISK of being cut off. Not the same as “being cut off” full stop. The bleed area is intended to be fully cut off, and the zone between bleed and safe area may be cut into due to the simple fact that nobody has time and money (or machinery) to cut business cards with 100% precision

r/Staples on Reddit: Confusion over business card updates
May 10, 2021 -

In P&M I'm sure you all have seen the changes they have made to order business cards. When a customer orders online what used to be called "Standard" (12pt Matte/gloss) is now called "Basic" and what used to be called "Premium" is now called "Standard."

Because of this change, way more people when ordering online are choosing "Standard" which means we are getting a lot more orders for 110# Matte and Gloss (Cougar).

The problem is we can only order 1 ream of Cougar Matte a week and we don't even have the ability to order the Cougar gloss at all.

So now every time somebody orders BC its 90% of the time the Cougar type paper either Matte or gloss, which we can't even order, so each time we have to call and either route the order or cancel and remake the order which take a bunch of time.

What kind of shit show is this? What do they expect us to do?

My mother intended to print some personal business cards, but she unintentionally uploaded the file with incorrect information, which we failed to notice until I checked the order progress. Is it possible to have the cards reprinted with the correct information without placing a new order or not at all? I couldn’t find any information about staples print reprint policy so I’m not sure what to do I would appreciate any advice or guidance. Thank you 🙏

Update: I’m not sure if my earlier reply will be seen or how to pin a post as resolve so here my update.

First, thank you to everyone who took some of their time to answer my post, your replies to it have been very helpful and informative. We will take your advices to heart and check with the store and if not then we will just reorder and find a way to repurpose the old cards or recycle them. Once again thank you and I hope you all have a good day. 🙏

I'm trying to upload my business card that I designed as a vector in Adobe Illustrator. I then exported it as a PDF and then opened it. It looked fine in my browser. I uploaded it to the Staples business card maker and it's extremely low-res. Is that how it's going to print, and what can I do to upgrade the quality? Thanks!

just complaining about the samples of business cards we offer on the bookring for customers to pick from, but have no idea which options are which when choosing on the website, and there aren't even about half of the options on the website either unless i just wasn't seeing them. like the foil options and the soft feel 16 pt. paper?? where am i supposed to find that? even the 14 pt. gloss that's supposed to be for delivery only was coming through as an order able to be produced in store on 110# gloss... why. even if i routed it or did delivery only i was scared they'd still end up being on the 110# gloss. what other "14 pt. gloss" was i supposed to pick?? they really need to update this 😵‍💫🙃 how am i even supposed to be able to show a customer which paper the website is describing when it doesn't even tell us lmao very professional being like "i think it might be this one" but i don't actually know because nothing on this website is accurate or actually tells me anything and half the time doesn't even work or goes down for maintenance in the middle of any given business day sorry. 😑 wtf.

I’ve tried the usual advice of calling local print shops, but the pricing came in much higher than expected ($100 for 250 cards). So far, Stap⁤les and Offic⁤e Dep⁤ot have been the most affordable at around $25 for 250 with discounts. I’m mainly looking for better bulk pricing or a membership option to bring costs down. I'm also seriously considering digital because I'm tired of this endless loop

r/Staples on Reddit: Two weeks later tales of the abandoned buisness cards
December 13, 2023 -

So this happened yesterday while I was in the shift. I got a call from a customer that if their order of business cards was ready. I couldn't find it at first. I asked my supervisor, and he found it, but since the order hadn't been picked up for two weeks, it had to be abandoned. And when I tell her, she's comparing why no one notified her about this, and I told her most of our customers pick their order the next day or maybe two days later if they're busy. If you don't pick it up, we assume you forgot about it, wasting our research. And I, she's definitely lying because my supervisor at a certain time, you don't pick up your corporate call, you... I told her she can resend the order online, or we can give her a refund. She says, "I want to ask for the manager." I reply with the same energy back to her and hung up on her. I explained the situation to my supervisor and explained like this in a funny analogy: We keep orders for two weeks, that's our policy, and throw it out. Do you think a restaurant is going to keep food for a day if the customer doesn't pick it up? No, they throw it away, or someone on staff takes it home as leftovers. So we continue on, then the phone arrives. I see it's the same number as Kade I talked to. I ignore it because I got other things to do in the list of orders on the flight deck. My supervisor picks it up, and it's the lady asking for the manager. He's telling her the same thing I'm telling her. She gets into an argument with him about something we can't settle. He makes another set of cards for her. She comes to pick it up, but doesn't say she's sorry. She just takes her business cards about helping the homeless by buying her book. So anyway, that's my story.
