I just got this pot for Christmas, so I haven’t used it yet, but I love this form factor. This is similar to the Le Creuset “round wide” 6.75 dutch oven (my favorite LC piece). I have both pots, and they have about the same searing surface area. The LC pot is 10” diameter circular cooking surface, the Staub is a 9” x 11” oval surface area (measuring the bottoms). So this Staub oval is wider and rounder than the typical Staub 31cm oval. The reason I prefer this one to the normal oval is that I’m on an electric glass top stove, so maximizing surface area on my round hob is preferable to the taller sides. It makes it more versatile for me. It of course can do the longer cuts of meat and battard bread loaves that a 31cm oval will do, but it will also handle a couple extra chicken thighs or short ribs compared to the typical oval. It will also work great for soups or one pot meals that need that extra browning. TLDR: This pot is for anyone who likes ovals, but wishes they had a little more surface area for browning. They have 9qt and I think up to 13 qt. If you see the imperfect ones I encourage you to try them. They will have great prices for the pieces and the imperfections don’t affect quality at all. More on reddit.com

I'll admit I love Staub the best of all the enameled dutch ovens. It's great quality, cooks like a dream and the black interior doesn't stain. But... I don't find the oval shape as useful as a round. I have one oval (given to me as a gift) and I think I've used it once over the years, where the rounds get pulled out and used every week (I have black beans cooking in my round Staub right now.) So not sure what I'd do in this situation. Between only those two, I guess the round(?) but honestly I'd wait to find decent price on a Staub round. More on reddit.com

I noticed the wide oval dutch oven was on sale at Williams Sonoma. It says 6.5 qt and the ‘original’ oval says 5.75 qt. The sides are shorter and the dimensions look like it would actually hold less.
Anyways, I am wondering if it is better to have the taller sides or if this is a good deal and it doesn’t matter too much? I’m just looking to make roasts, etc. What would the taller sides help better with? Or is the ‘wide oval’ kind of a braiser hybrid?
Please excuse my ignorance I’m still learning!

i remember seeing imperfect ones on the zwilling website around this time last year but never purchased cause i would prefer one that is not “imperfect”.
i’ve been on the search and the 8.5 has yet to return!! does anybody know of anything? let me know! 😊
also do they have sizes bigger than 8.5 (or have they ever)? i have a few Le Creuset pieces but want an oval Dutch bigger than 6.75 yet any LC pot bigger than that is limited in colors so I rather go with Staub’s color selections.
