Advice requested: Renovating IKEA Stenstorp Kitchen Island
STENSTORP Island gone?
Stenstorp Kitchen Island discontinued! Help!
There is a new version of STENSTORP that is replacing the current one. They both look identical, only difference is the current version has a solid wood top and the new one is particleboard top with a 1/8" wood veneer.

I have the exact same top on my ikea island (got it in 2003). I put on a bunch of coats of satin polyurethane (might have been semi-gloss). It held up extremely well; super-easy to wipe clean; looks great, etc. recently, though, the area under where I keep my chopblock (not direct contact; just four feet) has had the poly wearing away. So I am probably gonna sand the whole thing down and re-apply the poly.

Hello! I recently managed to get hold of a fantastic bargain through local ads, I got a Stenstorp kitchen island for £15. It looks in reasonable condition and we plan to paint it and treat (with OSMO worktop oil) the worktop. I just have a query about the worktop element as I have never owned an IKEA worktop before:
It is my understanding that the worktop on this piece is what IKEA refer to as an oak veneer. So I'm guessing it's only a very thin layer of actual wood? As we don't know the history of this piece, I wondered if I could get some advice as to sanding the worktop down to remove the existing finish (possibly an oil) without damaging it or going through the layers too deeply? I think it's the word 'veneer' that has me scared!
Any/all advice and tips welcome, thank you so much!
I'm placing an online order today (taking advantage of the free shipping!) and I can't find the STENSTORP kitchen island any more. Has it been discontinued? Any options out there?
My closest store is Merriam, KS, if that matters, but I know that doesn't matter for online orders.
