December 24, 2024 -
I remember when I was about 11 I read a book about Stephen and Matilda. The impression I got back then was that Matilda was a capable ruler but considered harsh and authoritarian, while Stephen (though weak and indecisive) was considered fair and just, and largely a benevolent figure. Is this a fair assessment of Stephen's character, not just as a king but as a person? What is the historical understanding currently?

Stephen and Matilda (r. 1135-1154) | The Royal Family
Though charming, attractive and (when required) a brave warrior, Stephen (reigned 1135-54) lacked ruthlessness and failed to inspire loyalty. He could neither control his friends nor subdue his enemies, despite the support of his brother Henry of Blois (Bishop of Winchester) and his able wife Matilda of Boulogne.

January 19, 2025 - In many ways, this is just a reflection of what Monarchy originally was; a military juanta. Stephen was able to usurp the throne because he was a part of the military organisation that made up the Juanta that conquered England. The nobles refused Matilda and most female heiresses later on as well as support the usurpation of King Richard II, and King Henry VI for the same reason.
