January 10, 2024 -

(Je parle français aussi, donc n'hésitez pas à me répondre dans la langue de Molière si vous préférez :)

I apologise for the depressing aspect of this post, but any info and/or tips would be lovely.

Like the title says, I'm wondering if it's something that's often being done in the MTL of 2024...

I'm losing everything and going to be homeless very soon, but I still have a storage unit with most of my stuff from my last apt.

I've managed to pay the 300$ or so monthly so far. I would need to go there anyway to see what to give away and what sell, but since I won't have a place to stay and with my physical limitations, I'd have to sneak some hours of sleep on the spot.

Do you think that staying hidden in it at least for a few nights be possible? I have zero experience with that kind of stuff (I have a car and normally I'd stay in it, but like with everything else I've been screwed by my relatives, so it's missing the left mirror, no longer insured, damaged and thus almost worthless, and so I've not paid to renew my driver's license. My plan is to use what is inside my unit and time to pay for car repairs, pay for it to be insured, and pay to renew my driver's license (I managed to find my passport which is still valid, renewed my RAMQ card, and have a bank account where funds can be transferred to. My phone account will be cut any day now, but with Wifi I can use Whatsapp. And I guess I'll have to force myself to return to FB after a decade, because marketplace is so bigger than Kijiji...

I know it's really not rare in Southern Cali/LA, where I used to study and work, but so much stuff are different between the two cities and respecting people and customs.

I've only been back to my native MTL 2 years ago, and been so sick and injured that it's like I knowing nothing about the place anymore; out of the loop for basically everything.

The other thing would be to drive the car without getting caught to a sort of public trailer park area (again, not sure if those places exist in MTL or MTL area, but in the US it could be a public rest stop or camping area next to a National Park; you guys know what I mean?

Is there a place of that nature in or not far from MTL where you can park and stay there no question asked?.

Ideally there would be a mix of both things: finding a place to leave my car without being checked for insurance and permit, and only move from there once everything is in order. Meanwhile, I need to go to my storage unit to sort stuff up. Unfortunately, the most sellable and valuable stuff are things like rare book collections, like an OG Pleiade library collection, Enlightenment era og book bought from French and Italian markets, etc. It's not a great place to leave that stuff in a crappy unit, and I'm gonna divide stuff for several people that will appreciate it a lot. Retro gaming stuff might be easy to sell though...

Anyway, I'll do my best to find money and pay for my permit, car insurance, and some of the repairs I should be suing my relative for. From there I don't know and I think it's better to take it one goal at the time, otherwise it's looking way too bleak, way too impossible.

That's kind of the plan. I'm owed an insane amount of money from what used to be my employment insurance, but I just don't have the strength to deal with that type of people anymore. For now, if you have any experience or tips on the storage unit or car subject, please feel free.

Given my limited mobility (left leg busted, etc), I really need to slip some nights within the storage unit (I can't imagine my car and the unit will be close, in fact they will probably be very far from each other.

Thank you so much guys for your time. C'est énormément apprécié. Prenez soin de vous.

First of all, any storage place is going to have cameras, alarms, and no facilities to use. They're not 'customer-friendly' in that respect. So I don't think you're going to have much luck in staying in a storage unit. The other thing you're not really thinking of is that if you're staying in your storage unit, it's not locked and whoever is doing the last sweep of the day is going to see it not locked and look inside the unit. You can't even put the lock open on the door, because you'd be inside the unit and have no way to put the lock on after you close the door. Second, if your car isn't reliable, how are you going to transport your items to be sold. Nobody is going to go to a storage unit to pick up whatever you're selling, they're going to think you're gonna drag them inside the storage unit and skin them to make lampshades. Not really a good selling point. If I were you (and I have been), I'd head over to a CLSC to talk with a social worker to see what options they have. They might be able to find you some sort of temporary lodging. If you're not working, you need to apply for EI (if you qualify) or social assistance. The faster you do this, the faster you'll get some funds coming in. Don't depend on getting what you think something is worth when you sell whatever possessions you choose to. Any books you think might have value, a second-hand bookshop is going to lowball you unless you have signed first editions, and even then, you're still not going to get full value. A car in this city is nice, but not a necessity. That should be the first thing you consider selling if you're that desperate. There was a news report a few weeks ago saying a car costs about $1500 a month between insurance, gas, parking, maintenance, etc. If you can't afford rent, you can't afford a car. Unless you plan on using it for delivery jobs, get rid of it ASAP and use that money to maintain yourself. In terms of money owed, unless you have something in your hand that says this money will be given to you on x date, you don't have that money and you can't depend on it, because nobody but a Trump lawyer takes promises as payment anymore. You'll never be able to get past a background/credit check with a landlord with 'but I'm owed (however much) money from these people, but I don't know when they're going to pay me'. Landlords hear that all the time from existing tenants and they're not going to take on new 'owe-sies' from someone new. I don't know where you are in Montreal, but you should find your way to the CLSC on St Catherine just east of St Laurent. They have a team of social workers who work with homeless issues and they might be able to help you. They did for me. They can also help you with filing for EI (again, if you qualify) or social assistance as long as you've been in the province for more than six months and you have a notice of assessment from your prior year's taxes. In the meantime, try to sell the car first, since that's the biggest drain on your finances. If you can't pay for the storage unit, they will deny you access to the property until you're paid up. Which means you won't be able to sell whatever possession are in it. After a while of non-payment (I don't know if it's six months or a year), they'll they'll sell what they can and toss what they can't sell. They'll consider it abandoned since you haven't paid and didn't collect your stuff before you defaulted on the contract.
