Don't forget that f-strings haven't been around forever. It may be partly old habits, it may be not keeping up to date with features, they may still be wanting to target a minimum python version that didn't support f-strings. 10is the total width of the field being printed, lefted-padded by spaces. - The

It has been a few years since this was answered, but as of Python 3.6 (PEP498) you could use the new f-strings:
numbers = [23.23, 0.123334987, 1, 4.223, 9887.2]
for number in numbers:
print(f'{number:9.4f}')
Prints:

Mark Cidade's answer is right - you need to supply a tuple.
However from Python 2.6 onwards you can use format instead of %:
'{0} in {1}'.format(unicode(self.author,'utf-8'), unicode(self.publication,'utf-8'))
Usage of % for formatting strings is no longer encouraged.
This method of string formatting is the new standard in Python 3.0, and should be preferred to the % formatting described in String Formatting Operations in new code.

If you're using more than one argument it has to be in a tuple (note the extra parentheses):
'%s in %s' % (unicode(self.author), unicode(self.publication))
As EOL points out, the unicode() function usually assumes ascii encoding as a default, so if you have non-ASCII characters, it's safer to explicitly pass the encoding:
'%s in %s' % (unicode(self.author,'utf-8'), unicode(self.publication('utf-8')))
And as of Python 3.0, it's preferred to use the str.format() syntax instead:
'{0} in {1}'.format(unicode(self.author,'utf-8'),unicode(self.publication,'utf-8'))

Every time i see someone use format() instead of an fstring i get confused considering fstring has much more readability and is a lot more merciful on the programmer when there is more than 1 variable going into the string.

format() can make more sense if you want to prepare the string you're formatting outside the scope of the variables you're formatting it with.

I was trying to make a, silly program in which you can do some random things. I used arguments (%)in the past, but it's a bit hard to write like the identification of the variable, like there is so much types (%s, %f, %2f, %d, %g, %e...) and I want to take the easiest to write or the easiest to debug.
here are some examples of using each one:
