Stringbuilder vs. String - why use String builder
A String in java is immutable. Basically when you do + using String it just creates another string and stores it in memory. In loops that can quickly get out of control. Stringbuilder concatenation does not have that problem. Hope my explanation was good. More on reddit.com

Should I worry about using StringBuilder rather than String, or the compiler uses already?
Benchmark it/profile it if you are worried. Otherwise, unless a profile shows it is causing you significant overhead, focus on what is more readable to you and spend the time saved on something that will be more useful! Don't micro-optimise. The JVM is fairly good at optimising this stuff for you and a good IDE like intellij will flag such issues in the editor More on reddit.com

Why should I use a StringBuilder instead of the + operator?
In some cases the + operator will compile down to use a stringbuilder so in simple cases where you are building a string inline there is no difference. For small in line cases don't worry about it. When building a larger string, for instance building an html document from a list of data, you can run into serious performance problems. You start creating and destroying immutable strings on every iteration. String htmlDoc = "lots of html"; for(String someData : listOfData) { htmlDoc += "
  • " + someData + "
  • "; } A new copy of the entire string in htmlDoc is copied for every iteration. Imagine copying a 10kb html document every time you run through that loop. Just a simple example, using a stream is a better approach but this illustrates the point. More on reddit.com

    Strings vs StringBuilder

You're not really going to find a better way to visualise it really unless you drew custom graphics, they do the same thing.

The explanation is the important part:

On each concatenation a new copy of the string is created, and is copied char by char. Iter 1 requires x chars copied. Iter 2 = 2x, 3= 3x and so on. Overall this equates to O(x + 2x +3x ..... +Kx) == O( xn2 ).

StringBuilder does the same functionality but uses a resizable array of all the strings and only copies them 1 time into a string when needed

What is the string builder in Java?
StringBuilder is a class in the Java API that provides a mutable sequence of characters. It is used for dynamic string manipulation, such as building strings from many smaller strings or appending new characters to an existing string. Additionally, it is more efficient than using the "+" operator for string concatenation, as this creates a unique string every time.  And added to this, Java String builder is a powerful tool for constructing strings. The builder can build strings of any length, from a single character to many characters. The builder is also thread-safe to be used in multi-thread
