This might be a little controversial, but I get the economist hard copies in the mail, and am consistently pleased with the quality of their journalism. Plus it helps me stay tuned to the business and science world's and how they relate to news in the US. I'm also going into an MPA program, so that might also explain my desire to keep up with the news. They have a deal for students, like $115 for a year. Weekly issues, it's a pretty good deal. Hey all, a little different post here but I think Gradschool can help! I'm a grad assistant/student earning my M.A. in global interactions. In my free time away from work and studies, I have a lot of junk time where I could be more proactive. I would like to start reading about a breadth of fields, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm interested in any areas and would like to the price to be as close to free as possible. Additionally, I wouldn't mind physical copies of magazines because I don't want to stare at my computer screen more than I have to. Thanks for any suggestions!

I'd advise to stay away from some of the mainstream magazines. When I started my Ph.D., I was thinking something like you are and got a subscription to Popular Science and a few others - these things are utter garbage, akin to the 'science articles' posted on yahoo news and their science section. Today I saw one on yahoo news, detailing a 'science' paper that describes how quickly a zombie apocalypse would wipe out the human race. A new article in a peer-reviewed student journal finds that the zombie hordes would take Earth's population down to a mere 273 survivors in 100 days. Source: https://www.yahoo.com/news/zombies-wipe-humans-less-100-134700805.html Also, Popular Science and similar mags have tobacco/cigarette ads every 5-10 pages, and far outweighed the presence of other ads. I guess I didn't realize that every scientist is a smoker. Sorry if this wasn't very helpful. What about just reading scientific articles that get published? I'm assuming you have access through your school, but if you don't there are many 'open access' journals. I have certain topics that I like to read up on and have subscribed to mailing lists for these things. I also follow some researchers on twitter to get my weekly dose.
